Registration Policies and Procedures

Before registering, we suggest you review the detailed UIC Registration Policies and Procedures. You can also download the 2008 Summer Session Handbook for Visiting Students for detailed information on registration.

Maximum Credit Hours

Over the summer, undergraduate degree seeking and nondegree students can register for up to 12 total credit hours, without special permission, whether they result from a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week sessions, or just courses taken in the 8-week session. Graduate students can take up to 20 credit hours over the summer, without special approval.

If you are a continuing UIC student and wish to register for more than the maximum credit hours allowed, please speak with your college advisor.

If you are a Summer Session Only student and wish to register for more than 12 credit hours, please contact the Registration Help Line at (312) 996-8600 when you are registering and request permission to register for the additional hours.

Registering for Courses

Registration at UIC is done online by going to UIC Web for Student and logging into Student Self Service. Below is information about registering for courses using this system.

When to Register for Classes

Current UIC Students: All eligible, continuing UIC students will be notified by email as to when they can view their registration Time Ticket online for summer and fall registration by going to UIC Web for Student and logging in to Student Self Service.

Summer Session Only and UIUC/UIS Intercampus Registration Students: Students who have been admitted as Summer Session Only students or as UIUC/UIS Intercampus Registration students can start to register during Open Registration (see “Key Dates”). All students who are eligible to register will be issued a Time Ticket. Your Time Ticket will tell you the earliest date and time that you can register during Open Registration. Time Tickets will be issued starting mid-April and can be viewed by following these steps:

  1. Go to UIC Web for Student and click on “Student Self Service Login.” Next, select "Student & Faculty Self-Service," and then "University of Illinois at Chicago." Login with your EnterpiseID and password. If you have not set it up yet, see “Activating Your Registration Login” for instructions.

  2. Click on "Registration and Records," "Registration," and then "Registration Eligibility."

  3. Under "Registration Eligibility," you will see the earliest date and time that you are eligible to register. If you are not eligible to register, i.e. if you have a hold, you will be provided with specific information on this page.

How to Register

You can register online at or after your appointed time by going to UIC Web for Student  and logging in to Student Self Service. This system is available 24 hours a day, except from 6:00 am -12:00 pm on Sundays.

Assistance is available online. Student Self-Service provides instructions for each step of the registration process, and online Help screens are available (Click on the word "Help" in the upper right hand portion of each screen).

Steps to Register:

Follow the steps below to register. For more detailed information that includes screen shots of the registration process, view Step by Step Registration Instructions.

  1. Go to UIC Web for Student and click on “Student Self Service Login.” Next, select "Student & Faculty Self-Service," and then "University of Illinois at Chicago." Login with your Enterprise ID and password.

  2. On the main menu, select "Registration and Records," then "Registration."

  3. To begin registration, first “Select a Term” on the menu and then select “Summer 2008 – Chicago” from the drop menu. Next use the “Look-up or Select Classes” link to search and enroll in your desired summer courses.

  4. Once you are viewing the “Look-up or Select Classes” page, you can search for the course you want by the subject and course number.

Important Tip!  If you wish to narrow your search to courses in the 4-week session, select “Summer Session 1” in the field labeled “Part of Term.” If you wish to narrow your search to courses in the 8-week session, select “Summer Session 2.”

If you do not select anything or if you select “All” for the Part of Term in the “Look-up or Select Classes” page, your search results will include all sections of a course offered in both the 4-week and 8-week sessions. You will need to pay attention to the “Date” of each section to identify when it meets. Courses in the 4-week session will have a date range of “05/19 – 06/12” and courses in the 8-week session will specify “06/16 – 08/06.”

  5. After you click on the “Class Search” button, you will see the sections that were found as the result of your search. Follow the instructions on the screen to register for the courses you want.

  6. If you know in advance which classes you want and their corresponding Course Reference Numbers (or CRNs, a five digit number sequence to represent a specific class section), you can use the “Add-Drop Classes” link instead of the “Look-up” link on the main menu to register. Follow the instructions on the screen.

  7. After you have registered, be sure to view and verify your schedule using the “Student Schedule – Detail” link on the main menu. We recommend that you print a copy of your schedule for your records.

If the courses you need are filled, call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 and we will try to assist you.

NOTE: Chemistry 101, 112, and 114 require placement tests. Even though you are able to register for them, you will be dropped from them if you have not taken the required placement exams. You can check our Placement Test information for details, or call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.

Registration Problems?

In the event you have a problem registering, there is a Registration Help Line, which can be reached at (312) 996-8600. If the Help Line is busy, you can also call us here at the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.

Linked Course Sections

Certain UIC courses consist of multiple linked sections which are noted in the course schedule. For example, some classes have a lecture section as well as a lab, quiz, or discussion section. To be properly registered, you must register for one of each of the linked sections. For example, BIOS 100 consists of a Lecture and a Laboratory-Discussion, each denoted by a separate Course Reference Number (CRN). You must register for two CRNs in order to be enrolled in BIOS 100. Before registering, be sure to have all of the required CRNs ready.

Course Prerequisites

A number of UIC courses have prerequisites, which are listed in the course schedule. Course prerequisites apply to all students, including Summer Session Only students.

In the majority of cases, Summer Session Only students do not need to provide a transcript verifying that they have met prerequisites in order to register for courses. However, if you register for a course that has prerequisites, we encourage you to bring a copy of your grade report or transcript with you to the first day of class in case the instructor wants to verify you have met the prerequisites.

If you plan to register for one of the courses listed below, you will need to obtain an override for the prerequisites. Please call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 for more information.

  • ACTG 211, Introduction to Managerial Accounting (previously ACTG 111)
  • BIOS 221, Genetics Laboratory
  • BIOS 351, Microbiology Laboratory
  • CHEM 112, General College Chemistry I
  • CHEM 114, General College Chemistry II
  • CHEM 232, Organic Chemistry I
  • ENGL 160, English Composition I
  • ENGL 161, English Composition II
  • FIN 300, Introduction to Managerial Finance
  • IDS 270, Business Statistics I
  • MATH 180, Calculus I
  • MATH 181, Calculus II

If you have questions about whether your previous coursework fulfills a course prerequisite, please contact the department offering the course for which you plan to register. You can access departmental contact information online or contact us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.

Restricted Courses

While most courses are available to all students, some courses have restrictions which limit registration to students meeting certain criteria, e.g., college, major, classification, or placement test scores. Course restrictions are noted in the course schedule. For example, priority registration for Art and Design courses is given to UIC students in that major. However, Summer Session Only students can register for Art and Design courses during Late Registration (see “Key Dates”) if space is available. For a limited number of courses, such as Architecture courses, registration is only open to students who are part of that program.

If the course schedule indicates that a course has restrictions but the list of eligible student groups includes “Summer Session” or “External Education,” the course is available to Summer Session Only students. For other restrictions, consult the department offering the course to find out if exceptions to these restrictions are permitted. You can access departmental contact information online or contact us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.

Courses Requiring Permission to Register

If the course schedule indicates registration for a course requires permission of the instructor or the academic department, please contact the appropriate department. You can access departmental contact information online. Some of these courses will not be available to visiting students. If you have difficulty contacting the department, call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013, and we will assist you.

Closed/Open Course Sections

If a section in which you are trying to register is closed, choose the "Look-up or Select Classes" menu option while you are logged in to Student Self Service. You can then enter the course in which you are trying to enroll to see whether there are other sections which have openings.

If no alternate section is available, you must choose another course. You can also keep checking back to see if a seat opens up in the course. Please call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 if you have any questions.
