Applying

How do I apply?
If you are a visiting student and would like to take undergraduate courses at UIC in the summer only, you can apply online as a non-degree, Summer Session Only student. The 2010 application will be available in mid-December. Sign up for our email list to receive a notification when the application is available.

Is there a fee to apply as a Summer Session Only student?
No.

What is the Summer Session Only application deadline?
4-week session or both the 4-week and 8-week: Friday, May 7, 2010
8-week session only: Friday June 4, 2010

Once I apply as a Summer Session Only student, how long will it take for me to hear if I am admitted?
Application processing begins on February 1.  It takes about one week for your application to be processed. Applications submitted before February 1 will be processed first.

Although the Office of Admissions will send you an official admissions letter, you can also check the status of your application online using the Login ID and PIN you created when you completed your application.

Do I register for classes at the same time that I apply?
No, you have to be admitted before you can register for courses. Visiting students register during the Open Registration period.

Open Registration for 4-week session: April 26 – May 16
Open Registration for 8-week session: April 26 – June 13

Registration instructions are included in your admissions letter, but are also available online. Because you must be admitted before you can register for courses, the best strategy is to apply early.

I applied and was accepted as a Summer Session Only student in a previous year. Do I need to apply again this year?
Yes, you will need to apply for the upcoming Summer Session. Your admission is valid only for the summer for which you applied.

I am a high school student. Can I attend summer session?
To be eligible for UIC’s Summer Session, you need to have graduated by the first day of the session that you want to attend (4-week: May 17, 8-week: June 14). If you will have completed your high school coursework and finals prior to the start of our summer session, but your graduation date is after the first day of the summer session, please contact the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or at (800) 625-2013 for further information.

I am an international student. Can I attend summer session?
International students attending other U.S. universities can take undergraduate-level credit courses at UIC during the summer but need to fulfill all admissions and eligibility requirements.

I attend a university outside of Illinois, but my official residence is in Illinois. What tuition rate do I pay?
If your official residence is in Illinois, you qualify for in-state tuition rates. If you believe you are eligible for resident tuition, please submit a copy of your permanent resident card to the Office of Admissions. You can fax it to the attention of Special Programs/Summer Session Only at (312) 413-7628 or to (312) 996-2953. If you prefer to mail it, send it to: University of Illinois at Chicago Office of Admissions and Records (MC 018), Box 6020, Chicago, IL 60680-6020, Attention: Special Programs/Summer Session Only.

If I enroll as a Summer Session Only student, can I continue my studies in the fall?
No, Summer Session Only is a non-degree status that is restricted to summer. If you want to apply as a degree-seeking undergraduate for fall 2009, you will also have to complete the Undergraduate Application prior to the appropriate Undergraduate Application deadline. Note: The fall Undergraduate Application deadlines are earlier than the deadline for the Summer Session Only application.

Can I apply to a degree program for the summer?

I would like to take graduate level courses over the summer. What do I need to do?
If you are interested in taking graduate level courses at UIC over the summer, use the Graduate Application. Check for the appropriate Graduate Application deadline. If you have any questions regarding the Graduate Application, contact the Office of Admissions by phone at (312) 996-4350.

The regular Graduate Application fee does apply.

Registering

How do I sign up for classes?
Visiting students need to apply and be admitted before they can register. Registration instructions are included in your admissions letter, but are also available online. Because you must be admitted before you can register for courses, the best strategy is to apply early.

When can I register for the Summer Session?
Summer Session Only students register online during Open Registration. Information about Time Tickets is emailed beginning in mid-April. Your Time Ticket tells you the earliest date and time that you can register.

Open Registration for 4-week session: April 26 – May 16
Open Registration for 8-week session: April 26 – June 13

How do I set up my logins to register?
Once you receive your Notice of Admission for the summer session, you will need to activate two IDs with passwords, a NetID and an EnterpriseID. You will need both of these IDs and passwords to access various services throughout the semester.

You will use your EnterpriseID to log in to Student Self-Service to check your registration eligibility and registration Time Ticket, registering for classes, check and update your address, view and pay your E-Bill, check your grades, and request transcripts.

You will use your NetID to access campus specific sites and services, such as UIC WebMail and Blackboard, to login to computers in the Academic Computing and Communications Resource Center (ACCC) labs, and to use ACCC dial-in and wireless network services.

Previous UIC students: You may have set up one or both of these login IDs already. If you already have a NetID but not an EnterpriseID, you can still refer to the instructions in the above link for establishing your EnterpriseID.

UIUC and UIS students: If you attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or the University of Illinois at Springfield, you will need to activate your UIC NetID and set up a UIC email account or email forwarding, but you will not need to establish an EnterpriseID. You will be able to use the same EnterpriseID and password that you use at your home campus.

Forget your Login IDs or Passwords?

NetID
If you forget your NetID, you can look it up using the UIC Online Phonebook. If you forget the password for your NetID, you can retrieve it online using the ACCC Password Changing Utility, or you can go to an ACCC computer lab and a lab consultant will assist you.

EnterpriseID
Note: Your EnterpriseID may be the same as your NetID. If you forget your EnterpriseID or password, go to the Enterprise Password Reset web page. Enter your NetID and your NetID password. You can then see your EnterpriseID and change your EnterpriseID password. If you have questions, contact the Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS) Help Desk at (312) 996-4806.

I am a visiting student. How do I know if a class will transfer to my home school?
If you are planning to transfer a course back to your home college or university, it is your home institution that determines whether a particular UIC course will transfer. You will want to provide your home college advisor with the UIC course description for approval.

Your advisor may also request a course syllabus. Many academic departments post syllabi on their websites. You can check the appropriate academic department website to see if it is available online. If a syllabus is not posted online, contact the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or (800) 625-2013 and we’ll contact the instructor to see when the syllabus will be available.

How many credit hours can I register for?
Undergraduate students can register for up to 12 total credit hours – either as a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week sessions, or just courses taken in the 8-week session.

If you wish to register for more than 12 credit hours, please contact the Registration Help Line at (312) 996-8600 when you are registering and request permission to register for the additional hours.

Graduate students can take up to 20 credit hours over the summer.

Because of the intensive nature of the 4-week session, students are advised to only register for one course.

I would like to take a course that says I must register for a lab section, but I don’t need to take a lab to meet my home school’s requirements. Do I have to register for a lab section?
Yes, to register for any UIC course you must comply with all the registration requirements for the course.

Do I need to take a placement test to register for a course?
Summer Session Only students are not required to take placement tests in order to register even though the course listing in the online Schedule of Classes may indicate this. However, you are responsible for determining if you are in the proper course. An instructor may advise you to change courses if you have registered for an inappropriate level. The placement test is also available as an option for students who would like to take it. If you have any questions, please call the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or (800) 625-2013.

Note: If you have been admitted to UIC in the fall, you may be required to take placement tests in order to register for fall courses. Please contact your college for more information.

A course I need to take is full. Is there a way for me to get into it?
If a section in which you are trying to register is closed, choose the "Look-up or Select Classes" menu option while you are logged in to Student Self-Service. You can enter the course you want to see if there are seats available in other sections.

Please call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 if you have any questions.

Tuition, Fees, and Financial Aid

How much does it cost to attend summer session?
Please go to the Tuition & Fees page for information about tuition and fees.

Where can I find an explanation of the fees that I will be assessed when I register?
Check the Explanation of Tuition and Fees page.

Do I have to pay the U-PASS fee?
The U-PASS provides eligible students unlimited travel on all CTA buses and trains at a discounted rate throughout summer session. All eligible students will be assessed the non-refundable U-PASS fee. Only students with documented disabilities that affect their ability to use CTA service can petition for a waiver of the U-PASS fee. These requests will be reviewed on a case by case basis. For more information, contact the Office of Disability Services at (312) 413-2183 (Voice) or at (312) 413-0123 (TTY).

When should I expect to receive a tuition bill?
Students can view their monthly billing statement (E-bill) online.

If you register by Monday, June 8, whether for the 4-, 8-, or 12-week session, you will be sent an email notification about your E-bill in early June. The payment due date will be Monday, June 28.

If you register after Monday, June 8 for summer courses in the 8-week session, you will be sent an email notification about your E-bill in early July. The payment due date will be Wednesday, July 28.

If you make changes to your registration that result in a range tuition change, you can view the updated balance due by logging into your Student Account Summary and selecting “View Accounts” under the E-bill option.

Can I get financial aid for the summer?

University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) Students: If you have financial aid at UIUC or UIS and want to use it for summer courses at UIC, contact your home school financial aid office. If you have financial aid available, you will need to apply to UIC through Intercampus Registration rather than as a Summer Session Only student.

Summer Session Only Students: You are not eligible to apply for financial aid directly at UIC because you will be attending as a non-degree student.

Directions to Campus and Parking

How do I get to campus?
Download and print an East Campus map and a West Campus map.

UIC is accessible by car and public transportation. For more information on how to get to UIC, go to the Directions to Campus web page.

Is parking available?
If you will be using University parking facilities only occasionally, you can park in the visitor lots and pay cash or purchase pre-paid parking coupons. However, if you will be driving to campus regularly, purchasing a parking assignment may be more economical. If you plan to purchase a parking assignment, we encourage you to do so early.

For more information about parking options, download the parking rules and regulations, parking maps and a parking application. You can contact Campus Parking at (312) 413-5800 or in person at their office in the Student Services Building, Room 2620, 1200 W. Harrison Street.

If you are registered in multiple courses during the summer and want to drop some but not all of your courses, you would be dropping individual courses.
