Many different kinds of visiting students attend UIC’s Summer Session each year. All visiting students must apply and be admitted non-degree before they can register for courses. Admissions processes may be slightly different for each category of visiting student so please select the category below that best describes you.

I’m an undergraduate at another university

If you are a UIUC or UIS student and want to use your financial aid, you will apply through a process called Intercampus Registration. Please contact your financial aid advisor to determine if you have financial aid available for the summer and then go to the Intercampus Registration web page for instructions and an application. If you’re not planning to use financial aid, please read below.

Students interested in taking undergraduate-level courses at UIC for the summer only apply as Summer Session Only students.

Please note that if you are currently attending another college or university, you must be in good standing at that institution.

Application deadlines
4-week session or both the 4-week and 8-week: Friday, May 7, 2010
8-week session only: Friday, June 4, 2010

Application decisions
For most applicants, it takes about five days for your application to be processed.

Although the Office of Admissions will send you an official admissions letter, you can also check the status of your application online using the Login ID and PIN you created when you completed your application. If you forget your Login ID and PIN, call Special Programs at (312) 996-8365.

Please not that if you check your application status online, the system may indicate that you need to provide high school and/or college transcripts. However, Summer Session Only applicants are not required to provide these transcripts.

Registering for courses
Visiting students need to apply and be admitted before they can register. Information about your appointment to register (Time Ticket) is emailed to admitted visiting students beginning in mid-April. Visiting students register during the Open Registration period.

Registration instructions are included in your admissions letter, but are also available online. Because you must be admitted before you can register for courses, the best strategy is to apply early.

I’m transferring to UIC in the fall

Some students who are transferring to UIC in the fall decide to get a head start on courses in the summer. If this is what you want to do, you will need to apply as a Summer Session Only student. This is a non-degree status so once you’ve completed the course, you’ll need to petition your college to transfer it into your degree program.  If you have questions about which course to take in summer, consult a UIC advisor.

Even if you attend Summer Session, you still need to submit your Intent to Enroll for the fall by the deadline, June 1.

I’m an international student who attends another university

If you are interested in taking noncredit English as a Second Language courses only, you do not need to complete a Summer Session Only application. For information about taking ESL courses, see the Tutorium in Intensive English website or send an email to tutorium@uic.edu.

International students attending other U.S. universities can take undergraduate-level credit courses at UIC during the summer but need to fulfill all admissions and eligibility requirements.[P12] 

  1. Complete the online Summer Session Only application.
  2. Mail the required supporting documents to the Office of Admissions.

Step 1 and 2 both need to be completed by the application deadline.

I already have an undergraduate degree

If you already have an undergraduate degree but want to take undergraduate courses in preparation for applying to professional degree programs, you can apply as a Summer Session Only student.

I’m a graduating high school senior

If you’re a graduating high school senior who wants to get a head start on college by taking a course in the summer, you can apply as a Summer Session Only student.

To be eligible for UIC’s Summer Session, you need to have graduated by the first day of the session that you want to attend (4-week: May 18, 8-week: June 15). If you will have completed your high school coursework and finals prior to the start of our summer session, but your graduation date is after the first day of the summer session, please contact the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or at (800) 625-2013 for further information.
