Activating Your Logins
Once you receive your Notice of Admission for the summer session, it will contain your University Identification Number (UIN), which you will need to activate two IDs with passwords, a NetID and an EnterpriseID to prepare to register. You will need both of these IDs and passwords to access various services throughout the semester. (Tip: you can set up the same password for both IDs to make things simpler.)
If you do not have your Notice of Admission letter, you can look up your UIN online. If you did not provide a Social Security Number when you applied, you were assigned a Temporary Control Number (TCN). This number will appear on your Notice of Admission letter and should be entered in the Social Security Number field when you activate your NetID.
You will use your EnterpriseID to log in to Student Self-Service to check your registration eligibility and registration Time Ticket, registering for classes, check and update your address, view and pay your E-Bill, check your grades, and request transcripts.
You will use your NetID to access campus specific sites and services, such as UIC WebMail and Blackboard, to login to computers in the Academic Computing and Communications Resource Center (ACCC) labs, and to use ACCC dial-in and wireless network services.
Previous UIC students: You may have set up one or both of these login IDs already. If you already have a NetID but not an EnterpriseID, you can still refer to the instructions in the above link for establishing your EnterpriseID.
UIUC and UIS students: If you attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or the University of Illinois at Springfield, you will need to activate your UIC NetID and set up a UIC email account or email forwarding, but you will not need to establish an EnterpriseID. You will be able to use the same EnterpriseID and password that you use at your home campus.
Forget your Login IDs or Passwords?
NetID
If you forget your NetID, you can look it up using the UIC Online Phonebook. If you forget the password for your NetID, you can retrieve it online using the ACCC Password Changing Utility, or you can go to an ACCC computer lab and a lab consultant will assist you.
EnterpriseID
Note: Your EnterpriseID may be the same as your NetID. If you forget your EnterpriseID or password, go to the Enterprise Password Reset web page. Enter your NetID and your NetID password. You can then see your EnterpriseID and change your EnterpriseID password. If you have questions, contact the Administrative Information Technology Services (AITS) Help Desk at (312) 996-4806.
Checking Your Time Ticket
Admitted visiting students can check their Time Tickets online to find out the earliest date and time that they can register during Open Registration. Follow the steps below to check your Time Ticket.
- In order to check your Time Ticket, you need to activate your logins.
- Go to Student Self-Service. Next, select "Student & Faculty Self-Service," and then "University of Illinois at Chicago." Login with your EnterpriseID and password.
- On the main menu, select "Registration and Records," then "Registration." Click on "Registration Eligibility" to view your Time Ticket.
How to Register
Visiting students need to apply and be admitted before they can register. Information about your appointment to register (Time Ticket) is available online.
You can register online at or after your appointed time by going to Student Self-Service. This system is available 24 hours a day, except from 6:00 am -12:00 pm on Sundays.
Assistance is available online. Student Self-Service provides instructions for each step of the registration process, and online Help screens are available (Click on the word "Help" in the upper right hand portion of each screen).
Steps to Register:
Follow the steps below to register. For more detailed information that includes screen shots of the registration process, view Step by Step Registration Instructions.
- Go to Student Self-Service. Next, select "Student & Faculty Self-Service," and then "University of Illinois at Chicago." Login with your EnterpriseID and password.
- On the main menu, select "Registration and Records," then "Registration."
- To begin registration, first “Select a Term” on the menu and then select “Summer 2009 – Chicago” from the drop menu. Next use the “Look-up or Select Classes” link to search and enroll in your desired summer courses.
- Once you are viewing the “Look-up or Select Classes” page, you can search for the course you want by the subject and course number.
Important Tip! If you wish to narrow your search to courses in the 4-week session, select “Summer Session 1” in the field labeled “Part of Term.” If you wish to narrow your search to courses in the 8-week session, select “Summer Session 2.”
If you do not select anything or if you select “All” for the Part of Term in the “Look-up or Select Classes” page, your search results will include all sections of a course offered in both the 4-week and 8-week sessions. You will need to pay attention to the “Date” of each section to identify when it meets. Courses in the 4-week session will have a date range of “05/18 – 06/12” and courses in the 8-week session will specify “06/15 – 08/07.” - After you click on the “Class Search” button, you will see the sections that were found as the result of your search. Follow the instructions on the screen to register for the courses you want.
- If you know in advance which classes you want and their corresponding Course Reference Numbers (or CRNs, a five digit number sequence to represent a specific class section), you can use the “Add-Drop Classes” link instead of the “Look-up” link on the main menu to register. Follow the instructions on the screen.
- After you have registered, be sure to view and verify your schedule using the “Student Schedule – Detail” link on the main menu. We recommend that you print a copy of your schedule for your records.
If the courses you need are filled, call the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013. We can advise you about course availability.
Maximum Credit Hours
Undergraduate students can register for up to 12 total credit hours – either as a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week sessions, or just courses taken in the 8-week session.
If you wish to register for more than 12 credit hours, please contact the Registration Help Line at (312) 996-8600 when you are registering and request permission to register for the additional hours.
Graduate students can take up to 20 credit hours over the summer.
Because of the intensive nature of the 4-week session, students are advised to only register for one course.
Course Prerequisites
A number of UIC courses have prerequisites, which are listed in the course schedule. Course prerequisites apply to all students, including Summer Session Only students.
Generally, Summer Session Only students do not need to provide a transcript verifying that they have met prerequisites. However, if you register for a course that has prerequisites, your instructor may ask you for verification. To provide for this possibility, bring a copy of your grade report or transcript with you to the first day of class.
If you plan to register for one of the courses listed below, you will need to obtain an override for the prerequisites. Please call the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 for more information.
- ACTG 211: Introduction to Managerial Accounting
- BIOS 220: Mendelian and Molecular Genetics
- BIOS 221: Genetics Laboratory
- BIOS 351: Microbiology Laboratory
- CHEM 112: General College Chemistry I
- CHEM 114: General College Chemistry II
- CHEM 232: Organic Chemistry I
- ENGL 160: English Composition I
- ENGL 161: English Composition II
- FIN 300: Introduction to Managerial Finance
- IDS 270: Business Statistics I
- MATH 180: Calculus I
- MATH 181: Calculus II
If you have questions about whether your previous coursework fulfills a course prerequisite, please contact the department offering the course for which you plan to register. You can access departmental contact information online or contact us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.
Restricted Courses
While most courses are available to all students, some courses have restrictions which limit registration to students meeting certain criteria, e.g., college, major, classification, or placement test scores. Course restrictions are noted in the course schedule.
For example, priority registration for Art and Design courses is given to UIC students in that major. However, Summer Session Only students can register for Art and Design courses during Late Registration (see “Key Dates”) if space is available. For a limited number of courses, such as Architecture courses, registration is only open to students who are part of that program.
If the course schedule indicates that a course has restrictions but the list of eligible student groups includes “Summer Session” or “School of Continuing Studies,” the course is available to Summer Session Only students. For other restrictions, consult the department offering the course to find out if exceptions to these restrictions are permitted. You can access departmental contact information online or contact us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.
Courses Requiring Permission to Register
If the course schedule indicates registration for a course requires permission of the instructor or the academic department, please contact the appropriate department. You can access departmental contact information online. Some of these courses will not be available to visiting students. If you have difficulty contacting the department, call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013, and we will assist you.
Linked Course Sections
Certain UIC courses consist of multiple linked sections which are noted in the course schedule. For example, some classes have a lecture section as well as a lab, quiz, or discussion section. To be properly registered, you must register for one of each of the linked sections. For example, BIOS 100 consists of a Lecture and a Laboratory-Discussion, each denoted by a separate Course Reference Number (CRN). You must register for two CRNs in order to be enrolled in BIOS 100. Before registering, be sure to have all of the required CRNs ready.
Closed/Open Course Sections
If a section in which you are trying to register is closed, choose the "Look-up or Select Classes" menu option while you are logged in to Student Self-Service. You can enter the course you want to see if there are seats available in other sections.
Please call us at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 if you have any questions.
Credit/No Credit Option
If you are interested in taking a class as credit/no credit, contact the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013 for information.
Auditing
You may audit a class, but you will first need to get permission from the instructor of the class (on or after the first day of classes) and from the dean of the college concerned.
You will also need to fill out a Visitor Permit form (available from the Office of Registration and Records) by the end of the first week of the term for the summer session. There is a charge for auditing a class.
Registration Problems?
If you have a problem registering, call the Registration Help Line at (312) 996-8600 or the Summer Session Office at (312) 996-9099 or toll-free at (800) 625-2013.
