Online Effective Professional Writing Program
Our Online Effective Professional Writing Program consists of two 5-week courses. Choose the one that best fits your needs, or take them both for a complete 10-week writing program

Advanced Grammar for Self-Editing focuses on improving your use of advanced grammar and punctuation, and finding and correcting errors in your own writing.

Advanced Writing and composing focuses on organizing and expanding your writing, using supporting details, and creating effective introduction and conclusion paragraphs.

Both courses are led by the Tutorium’s highly trained ESL instructors. Students use a password to log onto the course website (https://blackboard.uic.edu) and view assignments, listen to lectures, join class discussions and access instructor feedback.

Online Advanced Grammar for Self-Editing

This course focuses on producing clear, error-free writing at the Intermediate to Advanced level.  Instructors guide students through advanced grammar review, writing sample analysis, and development of effective self-editing techniques. Within the 5-week course schedule, students are able to work at their own pace and set their own deadline, with regular weekly feedback from the instructor.

In this course, students:

  • Review formal grammar and punctuation rules
  • Learn tools for identifying and addressing their own error patterns
  • Submit assignments for both instructor and peer feedback
  • Receive individualized instructor feedback throughout the course

By the end of the course, participating writers will be able to:

  • Identify weaknesses in their own and others’ writing
  • Make fewer errors in advanced grammatical structures
  • Use effective strategies for proofreading and editing their own work

When and Where
This class meets 100% online. There is no face-to-face classroom requirement. Students use the Blackboard learning management system (https://blackboard.uic.edu) for online assignments, discussions and feedback from the instructor.
