Directions to the Tutorium




Mission Statement

The mission of the Tutorium in Intensive English is to

  • Provide English as a second language instruction that enables non-native speakers to acquire the skills necessary to meet their academic, professional, social, and personal goals
  • Maintain a model intensive English program in support of the UIC master's degree program in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages)
  • Support the profession of TESOL and contribute to knowledge in the field
  • Serve as a campus and community resource for information about the teaching and learning of English as a second language and solutions to related problems
  • Assist the University in the development of international ties
  • Advance UIC's reputation for excellence and its image as an international, multiethnic, multicultural, and multiracial learning community

To achieve this the Tutorium will:

  • Employ a professional instructional and administrative staff
  • Use program resources to support
    • services and facilities that enhance the learning experience of Tutorium students and students in the M.A. TESOL program
    • recruitment, retention and professional development of Tutorium faculty and administrators
  • Maintain a fiscally sound program
  • Cultivate and maintain a program atmosphere which fosters cultural openness
  • Uphold the ethical standards of the profession
