Curriculum

The MBA in Financial Markets and Risk Management requires satisfactory completion of a minimum of 54 semester hours of academic credit, consisting of six (6) required core courses (24 semester hours of credit) and at least 30 semester hours of advanced courses. The courses are scheduled in a number of modules of varying length over a 12-month period.

Faculty for the program are drawn from UIC, with its nationally-ranked Department of Finance, and from the Chicago financial sector; instructors are selected to take advantage of academic and practitioner experience. This mix provides an outstanding blend of theory, practice, and cutting edge knowledge.

Required/Core Courses for the MBA/FMRM Program (24 semester hours of course work) include:

• Accounting 500 – Introduction to Accounting

• Economics 520 – Microeconomics

• Finance 500 – Introduction to Finance

• Information and Decision Sciences 532 – Operations Management

• Management 541 – Organizational Behavior

• Marketing 500 – Introduction to Marketing

• Additionally, a statistics course is required of all students

Advanced Courses (minimum of 30 semester hours):

Advanced Courses in Finance (14-22 semester hours) – representative courses include:

• Investments

• Options

• Special Topics in Finance

• Portfolio Analysis

• Futures

• Risk Management

• Equities

• Fixed Income Securities

• Derivatives

Additional Advanced Courses (8-16 semester hours) – representative courses include:

• Ethics

• Strategic Management

• Macro- and International Economics

• Advanced Statistics
