U I C Campus

The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is the largest institution of higher learning in the Chicago area. UIC is located just west of Chicago's Loop and is a vital part of the educational, technological and cultural fabric of the metropolitan area.

The campus was formed in 1982 by the consolidation of two campuses: the Medical Center campus, which dates back to the 19th century, and the comprehensive Chicago Circle campus which opened in 1965. Prior to the opening of Chicago Circle campus, the University of Illinois had a two year undergraduate program at Navy Pier which first opened in 1946 to educate returning veterans. The campus now has more than 100 buildings that cover 300 acres.

The campus enrolls almost 25,000 students and employs more than 11,000 people. UIC has an annual budget of over $1 billion dollars with about one-third of that total from state appropriations. UIC is one of the nation's 88 leading research universities with almost $160 million dollars in separately funded research. The campus is an international leader in many areas of health-related research.

The UIC Medical Center is one of the largest health science centers in the country with extensive research programs in all areas. UIC College of Medicine ranks among the top medical schools nationally in combined number of African American and Latino physicians in its graduating class. It graduates more students from underrepresented groups than any other U.S medical school, except Howard and Meharry. Black Issues in Higher Education has continued to rank UIC between third and fourth over the past 15 years as one of the top 100 institutions to grant the most professional degrees in Medicine. One in every six Illinois physicians is a UIC graduate..

The Colleges of Pharmacy and Nursing are ranked among the top ten colleges in their disciplines by U.S. News and World Report. A team of Pharmacy researchers have made groundbreaking discoveries on the cancer-fighting properties in natural products. Faculty in Nursing and Education published a compilation of works by more than 30 authors that illustrated community health innovations and issues in urban communities.

Scientists in the UIC Virtual Reality in Medicine Laboratory are training surgeons in the intricate techniques of ear surgery using a virtual model of the ear that they have developed. UIC ranks among top medical schools nationally in combined number of African American and Latino physicians in its graduating class.

UIC offers a range of academic programs that allow students to pursue research interests with renowned faculty. Campus partnerships with businesses, community organizations, cultural centers and health-care centers throughout the Chicago area provide students with a wealth of options for internships and co-op programs and community service. Faculty and students in their classes take advantage of the 'learning laboratory' that is Chicago.
