to the Urban Health Program at UIC

Our Mission

To improve the quality of health care services for medically underserved urban populations, especially those in Health Professions Shortage Areas of Illinois, by expanding health professions education opportunities for underrepresented groups (African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Mainland Puerto Ricans, and Native Americans).

Our Commitment is to:

  • Provide avenues for early exposure and entry for students from underrepresented groups in the health professions;
  • Provide programs and activities for undergraduate underrepresented students interested in the health professions;
  • Assess and enhance UHP programs and activities within the Health Sciences Colleges, the Graduate College, Early Outreach Program, Support Units and the UIC Medical Center;
  • Partner with the Chicago City Colleges in facilitating the transfer of UHP students interested in the health professions to UIC;
  • Support community health initiatives and programs;
  • Collect, integrate and disseminate data pertaining to UHP student outcomes;
  • Conduct research related to underrepresented student experiences and outcomes in the health professions pipeline at UIC;
  • Encourage urban health experiences for others interested and committed to practicing in medically underserved urban areas; specifically in Illinois.
