Syreeta
Robinson graduated in spring 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in
Health Information Management. She is the first sibling in her immediate
family to graduate college, but her family is no stranger to the health
professions. She has two uncles; one is a pharmacist and the other a
physician. Naturally her thought was to be a doctor and she chose pre-med
as her area of interest. However, she was quickly attracted to the idea
of combining health care with business applications and decided on Health
Information Management as her career path. She did an internship with
Blue Cross and Blue Shield where she assisted with billing and coding
applications, but it is the insurance part of the business that interests
her the most. She was recently hired at the company doing reimbursement
analysis. When
asked why she chose UIC, Syreeta cited the diversity of its student
population and its reputation as a place to get a quality education at
a good price.
She soon learned about the UHP academic and enrichment programs and
other services available at the College of Applied Health Sciences (AHS)
from Jeff Brown, UHP Director. As Syreeta became
quickly involved with the student body and was named President of the
College of Applied Health Sciences’ Student Council, serving
as liaison between Student Affairs and the students. She gave presentations
to the students about the many academic and enrichment programs and
other
services available through the UHP. Syretta quickly became involved with
the student body and was named President of the College of Applied Health
Sciences’ Student Council, serving as liaison between Student Affairs
and the students. During her tenure as president, the Council created
a list serve whereby students could communicate and share information.
They petitioned
the Dean for the creation of student lounges--four will be constructed
in the near future. They designed the new logo for the AHS College T-shirts
and had numerous fundraising activities to raise money for AHS students
that may be in need of assistance. Syreeta also held the Student Representative
position for the UIC Health Professional Student Council and the UIC
Senate. Syreeta has been recognized for her student participation
and achievements. She received the Student Leadership Award, the Academic
Achievement Award,
the Health Information Management Program Achievement Award, the Dean’s
award for Outstanding Service and for two consecutive years the Chancellor’s
Student Service Award.
