Questions and Answers: Abortion/Pregnancy Termination

How soon after an abortion can I get pregnant?
Does MEGALife cover abortions?

QUESTION:
I had an abortion two weeks ago, and I went for my two week check up and the doctor said everything was good! Just a little infection but I took medication for that! Well the next day I masterbated my bf and ejaculated on my vagina I THINK! And I wiped myself with a rag that he wiped himself before when I masterbated him from earlier! Well can I get pregnant from that? Am I ovulating? Can I get pregnant if I just had an abortion? (August 20, 2004)

ANSWER:
You can get pregnant very soon after an abortion. Abortion begins a new menstrual cycle; therefore, ovulation will resume after an abortion. How long after abortion does it take for ovulation begin? It is different for every woman. Most women begin to have a regular period in four to eight weeks. Since pregnancy after an abortion is likely, you should discuss birth control options with your clinician.

As far as pregnancy from masturbating with your partner: any time semen comes in contact with the vagina, there is a possibility of pregnancy occurring. Of course, pregnancy is also dependant on ovulation among many other things. If you are concerned you might be pregnant, it is recommended that you see your clinician for a pregnancy test. QUESTION:
Does the Megalife Student Health Insurance cover medical abortions? (April 8, 2004)

ANSWER: MEGA Life does cover elective termination of a pregnancy, whether it be medical or surgical. If you go to UIC to have the procedure done then it is fully covered as UIC picks up the additional costs you would normally pay (deductible and the 20% of the charges) if you did not go to UIC and were still considered "in network". If you go out side of the network, you would have to pay a decent percentage of the procedure cost as well as any deductible.

Therefore, if you are seeking to terminate a pregnancy and are a UIC student with MEGA Life insurance it may be beneficial to have the procedure done at UIC. The Center for Reproductive Health Office (on the West side of campus) offers Medical Termination procedures up to 9 weeks and surgical termination of pregnancy up to 14 weeks. This would also include pre and post procedure counseling. To talk to someone further about the procedures offered at the Center for Reproductive Health or to schedule an appointment please contact 312/413.7500. They are open Monday to Friday from 8-5pm, but if you call after hours for emergency reasons there is an answering service.

Some Planned Parenthood locations offer terminations of pregnancy as well, but the cost would differ depending on the location you go to. To find the nearest Planned Parenthood clinic please try a zip code search at www.plannedparenthood.org and it would be recommended to contact them to find out what procedures they offer as well as the cost.
