WAVESí primary role is to conduct health education and
promotion activities. This occurs in a number of ways. WAVES members are
trained to be peer health educators and facilitate interactive wellness
workshops requested by groups on and off campus. Members who complete the
training program and pass the test get national certification through the
Bacchus Network. In addition, members receive training on various wellness
topics, including alcohol awareness, sexual health, stress management, and
fitness and nutrition.
WAVES members also assist the Wellness Center in developing, planning and implementing wellness events and programs year around, including the National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week, the Great American Smokeout and Safer Spring Break. For example, last year the Great American Smokeout was planned and implemented entirely by WAVES.
Peer education programs have been an effective tool used around college campuses to raise awareness and educate students on various health issues. The program seeks to make students aware of the issues associated with unhealthy behaviors through education and up-to date information, as well as life skills training to assist students in making healthy life-style choices. The philosophy behind peer education is that students can play a uniquely effective role in encouraging their peers to consider, talk honestly about, seek professional advice, and develop responsible habits and attitudes toward the use or non-use of alcohol, safer sexual behaviors or abstinence, healthy eating choices, and other related health issues.
WAVES is an excellent way to network on such a large campus Ė it is a great opportunity to meet students from different organizations who come together to achieve one common goal.
As a WAVES member, you will learn important skills that will be beneficial to you after you have left college. Some of these skills include leadership, communication, public speaking, event/program planning. Exposure and experience are key elements to a successful college career and you get both by joining WAVES!
More importantly, WAVES is a service organization that is committed to making a difference at UIC by helping student address their wellness needs and avoid dangers.
Itís easy. All you have to do is complete a membership application. You can get a hold of the application in a number of ways:
One you have completed and submitted your application, you will be contacted by WAVES to confirm your application.
The Wellness Center opens up one internship position per semester.
