GWS Student Activism Get involved in the campus community, connect with faculty and other students, have fun while learning new skills and making a difference! The GWS Program works closely with other departments and campus units, co-sponsoring a wide range of programs and special events on campus throughout the year. In recent years GWS students and faculty have been involved in the following projects: * Campus production of the play, The Vagina Monologues UIC Activism Links Feminists United is a community of feminists trying to reach out and educate the rest of the campus about feminism, while having a good time in a supporting environment. We do a variety of educational, activist, and other work around many different kinds of issues about or that affect women. Our purpose is to work for changes in ourselves and other individuals and to fight the social and cultural ideologies, institutions, and polices that perpetuate sexism and oppression of any and all people. Our primary intent is to work towards ending sexism in all forms through action and education. We recognize the intersection of oppressions such as racism, classism, heterosexism, ageism, xenophobia, homophobia, biphobia, gender discrimination, discrimination against intersexed people and all forms of oppression that detract from people's well-being and ability to live their lives by their own choosing. Men Against Sexual Violence (MASV) is a student group aimed at engaging men from all communities in the fight to end male perpetrated gender violence. By hosting workshops and events we encourage men to question the negative aspects of traditional masculinity and embrace an alternative vision of manhood that is not inherently violent, sexist, or misogynistic. We also provide spaces for men to discuss issues of sexual violence and masculinity without fear of being judged, as men are not only perpetrators of sexual violence but survivors as well. In addition, MASV remains accountable to and works with women as women have been doing anti-violence work for years. This is everyone's issue and men can help stop sexual violence! Pride is the University of Illinois at Chicago's student GLBT organization. If you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered, straight and supportive, simply curious, or anything else that makes you feel you would fit in here, Pride is for you! Our goal is to show everyone that they will be welcome and accepted here.GWS 294 Peer Educators: Reducing Campus Violence In this class you can learn how to join in the struggle to end interpersonal violence, especially domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking. The class helps you develop the skills you need to conduct effective anti-violence educational workshops on campus. In addition, you will gain comprehensive understanding of these types of violence.
