Judith Kegan Gardiner's research interests include feminist and psychoanalytic theory, twentieth-century writing by women, seventeenth-century English literature, women's studies, and masculinity studies. Recent courses have included Feminist Theories and Criticism, Women's Literary Traditions, and Shakespeare.
Her current research focuses on masculinity in feminist theory. Her edited book Provoking Agents: Gender and Agency in Theory and Practice appeared in 1995, and her edited book, Masculinity Studies and Feminist Theories, was published by Columbia University Press in 2002. Recent publications discuss South Park, femininity, and collegiality. The International Encyclopedia of Men and Masculinities, co-edited with Michael Flood, Bob Pease, and Keith Pringle, was published by Taylor & Francis in 2007.
She is one of the original founders of the Gender and Women's Studies Program at UIC and a long-time member of the editorial collective of the interdisciplinary journal, Feminist Studies. She has served as co-chair of the Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Women, as Interim Director of the Center for Research on Women and Gender, and as Director of GWS.
