Flora Rodriguez-Brown

Flora Rodriguez-Brown is a professor of education and coordinator of bilingual/ESL training programs.  She has been a member of the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago for over 25 years.  Dr. Rodriguez-Brown has been an advocate for bilingual, bicultural, and ESL education for thirty years, working in several universities and centers across the state.  She is also the director of Project FLAME, a family literacy and academic excellence program that is specifically designed for limited English proficient families. Along with Dr. Timothy Shanahan, she founded Project FLAME in 1989 originally to help families of preschoolers and primary grade students improve literacy learning in the home.

Dr. Rodriguez-Brown currently researches issues of second language literacy, parent education, learning at home and school and language interaction in the classroom.  She continues to focus her efforts on directing Project FLAME, making it into one of the most effective ESL and family literacy programs in the country.  Under her stewardship, the pilot program in Chicago was so successful that 54 FLAME sites have been created in nine states across the country and one site in British Colombia.
