Flora Rodriguez-Brown
Flora
Rodriguez-Brown is a professor of education and coordinator of
bilingual/ESL training programs.
She has been a member of the faculty at the University of Illinois
at Chicago for over 25 years.
Dr. Rodriguez-Brown has been an advocate for bilingual,
bicultural, and ESL education for thirty years, working in several
universities and centers across the state. She is also the director of Project FLAME, a family
literacy and academic excellence program that is specifically designed
for limited English proficient families. Along with Dr. Timothy
Shanahan, she founded Project FLAME in 1989 originally to help families
of preschoolers and primary grade students improve literacy learning in
the home.
Dr.
Rodriguez-Brown currently researches issues of second language literacy,
parent education, learning at home and school and language interaction in
the classroom. She continues
to focus her efforts on directing Project FLAME, making it into one of
the most effective ESL and family literacy programs in the country. Under her stewardship, the pilot
program in Chicago was so successful that 54 FLAME sites have been
created in nine states across the country and one site in British
Colombia.
