Cynthia Hynd-Shanahan
Cynthia R. Hynd-Shanahan, is
a professor of Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of
Illinois at Chicago, the coordinator of secondary education in the
College of Education, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, and the
executive director of the UIC Council on Teacher Education. In addition,
she conducts programs that lead to a reading endorsement for high school teachers in
the Chicago Public Schools.
After receiving her
doctorate in reading education from the University of Georgia in 1984,
Dr. Hynd-Shanahan taught at Georgia State University from 1984 to1986 and
was a member of the faculty at the University of Georgia from 1986 to
2001. She has also been a public school teacher and a teacher of reading
instruction and academic literacy.
Dr. Hynd-Shanahan’s current
research interests include content-area literacy, conceptual change, and
the reading of multiple texts. She was coeditor of the Journal of
Literacy Research and the Illinois Reading Council Journal. She also spent several years
working on a teacher education project in the former Soviet Republic of
Georgia.
