Alison
Toback-Hofeld
As Project
Coordinator for SOAR: Sharing Opportunities and Activities for Reading, a
Head Start Early Literacy & Youth Development Initiative, Alison
Toback oversees the training and placement and of teens and parents in
Head Start sites throughout Chicago.
She develops youth
programming to help teens from Head Start families gain employment and
leadership skills as well as hands-on experience with early childhood
literacy activities. She also supervises a team that collaborates with
FAST to provide family literacy instruction and career building training
to Head Start parents.
Ms. Toback has
taught and coordinated adult basic education programs at the City
Colleges of Chicago, The New York Public Library and the Blue Gargoyle
Adult Learning Program. She also taught English in Honduras, developed youth programming in Chicago, worked as a union organizer and served as a
liaison between Chicago
Public Schools and
community-based organizations.
She currently serves
on the boards of Literacy Works and the Blue Gargoyle Community Services
and chairs the financial education committee of the South Side Community
Development Credit Union, which she helped organize as an alternative to
predatory lenders.
Ms.
Toback received her Master of Arts in Adult and Continuing Education from
Columbia University Teachers
College in 1997.
