WHY to Consider Adopting FLAME

  • Parents feel at a disadvantage because their lack of English skills

HOW to Adopt FLAME at Your School or Organization

  • Begin by talking with school administration, staff, and parents to determine local interest and commitment to a parent literacy program.
  • Ascertain the availability of human resources, space, and funding to conduct a family literacy program in your school and community.
  • Contact Project FLAME and we will set you up with materials, training and support.

WHAT You Agree to When You Adopt FLAME

  • To attend training sessions.
  • To embrace the theoretical framework, parent education program components, and focus of the program.
  • To develop locally appropriate FLAME activities.  
  • To share evaluation data (Boehm, print awareness and vocabulary tests, district testing information, questionnaires, etc.) with the FLAME training research team at UIC.

TRAINING That FLAME Offers When You Adopt

  • Training sessions for school personnel and parents who will be trained as "parent-teachers."
  • Presentation of trainee-appropriate information regarding resources, planning, parents-as-teachers topics, and planning.
  • Observation of a literacy session and/or ESL session at an established site.
  • Collection of baseline, formative evaluation information from trainees regarding evidence of home use of literacy information and parents' evaluations of the training sessions.
  • Follow-up sessions and/or site visits by FLAME personnel to observe or discuss sessions as well as to coach and support the trainers.
  • Consulting services and any new publications or material developed by FLAME staff.
  • Project FLAME training manual.
  • Information and training in evaluation procedures.

The FLAME training program takes place in Chicago or at your site. It focuses on the theoretical framework and program model, ideas for working with parents and the community, and the organization and planning of FLAME curriculum.
