INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP - EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION

I. APPLICATION MATERIALS & PROCEDURES

In order to apply you must submit the following materials to UIC's Office of Graduate Admissions. The application instructions provide a detailed explanation of these required materials.

1)
A completed application    [ online form ]   
You may complete the application online, print the online application and submit it filled out by hand or request a paper version from the Admissions Office and complete it by hand (if you do not have internet access). We recommend that you complete the application online because it will allow for the quickest processing of your application.
2) The application fee
The nonrefundable application fee for U.S. citizens, permanent residents and other non-citizen applicants is $50. The fee for International applicants is $60.
3) Official transcripts
Official transcripts for the last 60 hours of your undergraduate degree and official transcripts for ALL courses taken after completion of your undergraduate degree (undergraduate and graduate courses). The department does not make exception to this requirement because of the age of the courses or degree work. Transcripts must be sent directly from the institution you attended to the Admissions Office to be considered official.
4) TOEFL
An applicant whose native language is not English is required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). This test is administered by the Educational Testing Service, Box 899, Princeton, New Jersey 18540. A minimum score of 550 (paper test) or 213 (computer test) is required for admission to the Education specialization. The new TOEFL iBT requires a total score of 80 with minimum scores of 21 in Writing, 20 in Speaking, 17 in Listening, and 19 in Reading.

Strand A)  For applicants pursuing the Type 04 Early Childhood Certificate and a M.Ed. Degree.
1) Passing scores on the Illinois Basic Skills Test
2) A completed questionnaire and written statement regarding experience with young children    [ online form ]   
3) An interview with program faculty (the department will contact you to set this up)
4) College of Education M.Ed. application    [ online form ]   
A completed College of Education M.Ed. application
5) 3 Letters of Recommendation    [ online form ]   
These letters should address the applicant's academic qualifications, research ability/experience and ability to carry on advanced degree studies. Letters may be from current or former professors or supervisors. At least one letter should be from someone who can address your experience working with children.
6) Official transcripts
Official transcripts for the last 60 hours of your undergraduate degree and official transcripts for ALL courses taken after completion of your undergraduate degree (undergraduate and graduate courses). The department does not make exception to this requirement because of the age of the courses or degree work. You may gather all of these transcripts and send them to the College of Education at one time, but you must leave each individual transcript in the sealed envelope from the school.
Strand B)  For applicants who DO NOT want the Type 04 certificate, ONLY the M.Ed. Degree

No application will be processed unless all credentials are received by the semester application and credentials deadlines as published by the University's Office of Admissions and Records. At least six weeks should be anticipated for the submission of all credentials. Any questions regarding the application procedure or the status of an application should be directed to the Graduate Admissions Officer for Master's programs at (312) 996-4536.

II. DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

STRAND 1
M.Ed. plus the Type 04 Early Childhood Education certificate with and endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education. This is the blended Early Childhood Education/Special Education program.

33-34 semester hours of credit are required for the degree of which at least 12 hours must be at the "500" level. Courses numbered 596, 597, 598 or 599 do not meet this requirement. You must take 11-15 additional hours for certification.

  • History and Philosophy of Early Childhood Education (EPSY 449 - 3 hours)
  • Developmental Psychology (ED 422 - 3 hours) or Development in Infancy and Early Childhood (EPSY 526 - 4 hours)
  • Characteristics of Infants and Young Children with Disabilities (SPED 506 - 4 hours)
  • Constructivist Approaches to Development: Piaget & Vygotsky (EPSY 429 - 4 hours)
  • Curriculum and Practice in Early Childhood Education (EPSY 520 - 5 hours, 100 hours of fieldwork in preschool)
  • Language Development, Diversity and Disabilities (EPSY 466/SPED 466 - 3 hours)
  • Methods of Instruction and Assessment for Infants and Children with Disabilities (SPED 508 - 4 hours, 45 hours fieldwork in Early Intervention)
  • Forging Collaboration with Family and Staff (SPED 582/EPSY 582 - 3 hours)
  • Reading and Writing with Young Children (CIE 509 - 4 hours)
Additional Certification Requirements
  • Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment in Primary Grades (EPSY 519 - 5 hours, 100 hours fieldwork in the primary grades)
  • Student Teaching: Early Childhood Education Student Teaching (EPSY 521 - 10 hours) or Student Teaching in the Primary Grades (EPSY 522 - 6 hours)
STRAND 2
obtains an M.Ed. ONLY .

32 semester hours of credit are required for the degree of which at least 12 hours must be at the "500" level. Courses numbered 596, 597, 598 or 599 do not meet this requirement.

  • One course from:
    • Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment in Primary Grades - EPSY 519 (5 hours)
    • Curriculum and Practice in Early Childhood Education - EPSY 520 (5 hours)
    • Methods of Instruction and Assessment for Infants and Children with Disabilities - SPED 508 (4 hours)
    • Independent Study - EPSY 596 (4 hours)

  • 6-8 hours of electives (selected from graduate level Education courses in consultation with your advisor
