Healy Life Skills
Training Program (1997 - Present) In partnership with the Illinois Department of Corrections, Early Outreach conducts a Life Skills Training Program at the Healy Program Center on Chicago's Westside. The facility, located at 100 North Western Avenue, houses a high school and a GED program for adolescents age 15 through 21. These students, because of poor decision-making skills, have become involved with the judicial system. The program has three components: workshops, performing arts, and culinary skills. Their purpose is to provide experiences and exposures which will better empower youth to take charge of and accept responsibility for their personal and social growth. The program teaches life skills through a series of workshops and classes. The workshops focus on self-awareness, goal setting, job skills, money management, coping skills, relationships and etiquette. This training is reinforced in both the performing arts and culinary skills components, which offer hands-on, interactive instruction, as they support the academic portion of the student's schooling in reading, writing and mathematics. |
