Hispanic Math/Science Education Initiative (con't)

  • Mathematics

HMSEI mathematics places the emphasis on doing. For instance, the annual Bridge Building Contest conducted by the sophomore math classes. Math subjects include: pre-algebra, algebra, measurement, geometry, trigonometry, and ACT preparation.

  • Science

HMSEI science is about discovery. HMSEI 8th grade students begin with biology and basic dissection. HMSEI 9th grade students learn anatomy and advance dissection techniques, as evidenced by this dissection of a sheep brain. Other topics include chemistry, physical science, geology and ACT preparation.

  • English

HMSEI English emphasizes communication. From poetry slams, to Cable productions HMSEI students learn expression in the first person. HMSEI English works at creating the best essay, poems and video projects. In addition, the 11th grade students are involved in ACT preparation.

  • Parent Network

Concurrent with the academic year, the HMSEI Parent Network produces a series of workshops relevant to the concerns of HMSEI parents, including the selection of the proper high school curriculum. Other workshops are about financial planning and financial aide to help parents be prepared when their children enter college. Parents are also involved in fundraising for the annual Senior gift. Parent meetings are the second Saturday of each month.

  • Ready to start? How to join ...
  1. Speak to your school counselor and ask that an Early Outreach recruiter come to your school.
  2. Contact the Early Outreach office and request an application (312) 996-2549.
  3. If you are in high school, ask for the counselor assigned to the program.
  • The Challenge -- The Student

Walking the road to a college future and a successful career is the challenge to the prospective HMSEI student. Accepting the challenge means a commitment to work hard and regular attendance. The reward is the preparation for college study and the knowledge that 98% of the HMSEI students that complete the program do attend college.

Since 1996, thirty students have been placed at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Other universities that former HMSEI students now attend are Stanford, Northern, DePaul, and the University of Chicago, just to name a few. The academic classes are the heart of the HMSEI program and the road will lead to college.

  • Good candidates for the HMSEI are those students who:
  1. can enroll in either Benito Juarez or Roberto Clemente High Schools,
  2. will make a commitment to work hard and attend the program regularly,
  3. will enroll in math and science programs in their high school,
  4. can count on their parents/guardians to be active in the Parent Network, and
  5. candidates must be at grade level.
