Chancellor's Message: FY13 Discovery Fund Recipients

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to announce the FY13 recipients of the Chancellor's Discovery Fund for Multidisciplinary Research. This program was established to support new multidisciplinary collaborations by emerging researchers at UIC, foster academic inquiry, nurture the research career trajectories of promising early-stage investigators, and help the recipients leverage extramural funding. Of thirty-three applications submitted and reviewed by the Campus Research Board, five were selected.

This year's recipients represent a broad array of disciplines from across UIC, including the first partnership between architecture, humanities, and the Innovation Center.

Following are this year's recipients:

Team: Jennifer Brier, Associate Professor, Gender & Women's Studies, Liberal Arts & Sciences; Julie Flohr, Clinical Assistant Professor, Architecture; and Matthew Wizinsky, Information Architect, Innovation Center. Project: History Moves: How to Design a Community-Engaged Public History Project on Wheels.

Team: Sriram Ravindran, Research Assistant Professor, Oral Biology, Dentistry; Jun Cheng, Assistant Professor, Bioengineering, Engineering and Medicine; and Yong Wang, Assistant Professor, Surgery, Medicine. Project: Biomimetic Tissue Engineering to Improve Life and Functionality of Transplanted Islets.

Team: Michelle Kominiarek, Assistant Professor, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medicine; Pauline Maki, Professor, Psychiatry, Medicine; and Leah Rubin, Assistant Professor, Psychiatry, Medicine. Project: Enhancing Perinatal Mental Health: A Feasibility Study of a Collaborative, Translational Research Approach.

Team: Ursula Perez-Salas, Assistant Professor, Physics, Liberal Arts & Sciences; and Mark Rasenick, Professor, Physiology and Biophysics, Medicine. Project: Action Mechanism of Antidepressants: Probing Their Effect on Artificial Neural Membranes.

Team: Mansha Mirza, Assistant Professor, Occupational Therapy, Applied Health Sciences; Hui-Ching Chang, Associate Professor, Communication, Liberal Arts & Sciences; and Dina Birman, Associate Professor, Psychology, Liberal Arts & Sciences. Project: Lost in Translation: Role of Language Translators in Cross-Cultural Substance Abuse Communication with Refugee Communities.
