 Second City Cofounder Sahlins

Second City cofounder Bernard Sahlins, along with Court Theatre founding director Nicholas Rudall, directed an acclaimed recreation of the 1992 Court Theatre production of The Mysteries: Creation at UIC. Adapted by Sahlins from medieval mystery plays, The Mysteries: Creation covers Old and New Testament events as seen through the eyes of workmen from the fall of Lucifer to the flight of Mary and Joseph into Egypt.

Although the play has been staged all over the country, Sahlins and Rudall have not directed it since 1992. Sahlins said UIC was an ideal place to re-create the production. "UIC students represent the strata of society," he said. "This production [echoes] the plays produced by the guilds in medieval times."

This is Sahlin's second partnership with UIC. In spring 2001, he taught a course called The Short Comic Scene. "I was pleased at the skill level the students possessed. It shows the strength of the training program at UIC," he said.

"Working with Bernie and Nick has been great," said Jason LeCompte, a theater major who played the role of God. "Bernie's a lot of fun. His comic timing is just incredible. And Nick knows just how to get it done—exactly how to get it done. He can take anyone in any role at any level of talent and get what he wants."
