On November 17, before 8:30 p.m., a UIC student was the victim of an attempted armed robbery off-campus in the 1100 block of West Maxwell Street.
The student was walking westbound on Maxwell when he was approached by four offenders who ordered him to stop and surrender his possessions. One assailant partially displayed a handgun.
The victim did not comply and instead ran westbound on Maxwell. Two of the offenders gave chase. As the victim reached the Blue Island CFD Fire Station at 13th Street, the offenders quit their pursuit. The victim was not injured.
The offenders were described as follows:
- Black male, 18-20 years old, 5-6 to 5-8 tall, with brown eyes, dark complexion, and wearing dark hoodie, displayed handgun
- Black male, 18-20 years old, 5-6 to 5-8 tall, with brown eyes, dark complexion, hair in dreadlocks, and wearing spotted white/dark hoodie
- Black male, 18-20 years old, wearing dark clothing
- Black male, 18-20 years old, wearing dark clothing
UIC Police strongly recommend COMPLYING with an armed offender whose intent appears to be property or valuables.
General security tips:
- be aware of your surroundings
- try to travel in groups when possible, particularly after dark
- use well-lit walkways
- on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 1,500 across campus)
- the emergency number for UIC Police is 5-5555 or 312-355-5555, which should be set on speed-dial on your cell phone
- report crime promptly to police
