Chancellor Message 11/17/11

Message to Campus
Vice Chancellor for Research

I write to inform you that Joe G.N. "Skip" Garcia has submitted his resignation as Vice Chancellor for Research at UIC effective February 1, 2012, so he can concentrate full-time on his new position as the University of Illinois's Vice President for Health Affairs.

In his letter to me, Dr. Garcia said "the present challenges within the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System merit my full attention and energy and I am eager to pursue the programmatic goals President Hogan and I have established for the clinical enterprise." I understand and fully support Dr. Garcia's desire to focus on his responsibilities as Vice President for Health Affairs.

Since joining UIC in February 2010 after four years as chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago, Dr. Garcia has been a dynamic leader of the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research. Among his other accomplishments, he has established thematic areas of excellence; created research advisory councils to support recruitment and retention of key faculty; and facilitated a comprehensive review of research administrative processes and systems.

As you know, earlier this year President Hogan and the Board of Trustees created the position of Vice President of Health Affairs at the University of Illinois to oversee our clinical activities. Dr. Garcia was named interim VPHA in March and to the permanent position in June, while retaining his VCR portfolio. It was anticipated that at some point he would transition to the VPHA role on a full-time basis once he had completed major initiatives in the OVCR.

Please join me in thanking Skip for his service to UIC as Vice Chancellor for Research and in wishing him continued success as Vice President for Health Affairs. An announcement on an interim VCR will be made shortly.
