RE Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

Dear Colleagues,

I am very pleased to announce that I will be recommending to the Board of Trustees the appointment of Jerry L. Bauman, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, as Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The appointment would take effect January 3, 2011 and continue until a permanent Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs is selected.

Dean Bauman has served UIC with distinction for more than 30 years as a teacher, researcher and administrator. He began his career at UIC in 1979 as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy Practice in the College of Pharmacy. He has also served in the roles of Assistant Head for Academic Affairs, Assistant Head for Research, Head of the Department of Pharmacy Practice, Interim Dean (2006) and Dean since 2007. Jerry is highly regarded and respected for his leadership and is deeply committed to UIC. During his tenure as Dean he has expanded the College's programs and built upon its tradition of excellence. Jerry is not a candidate for the permanent position and will return to the deanship upon the conclusion of the search for a permanent successor to Provost Michael Tanner.

Dean Bauman holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Illinois at the Medical Center (now UIC) and a Pharm.D. degree from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. He has more than 100 original publications, 75 abstracts and multiple book chapters. He has served on many of the top peer-reviewed editorial boards in his discipline and holds memberships and appointments in many professional affiliations. Dr. Bauman has done extensive research on the clinical pharmacology of cocaine and the proarrhythmic side effects of antiarrhythmic agents and other drugs. For these efforts he was given the Russell Miller Award for Research in 1994. He is a Fellow in the American College of Clinical Pharmacy and the American College of Cardiology.

Pending Board approval, Dean Bauman will serve as Interim Vice Chancellor designate from January 3 through February 28, 2011, and as Interim Vice Chancellor beginning March 1.

I look forward to working with Jerry in his new and expanded role at UIC. Please join me in congratulating him on his new position.

Sincerely,

Paula Allen-Meares
Chancellor
