Chancellor Message to Campus

Monitoring Federal Spending Cuts

Dear Colleagues,

I am writing to inform you that we are keeping a close eye on the potential automatic federal spending cuts known as sequestration which are set to take effect on March 1, 2013. If enacted, these cuts will result in significant budget cuts across federal agencies which would impact both new and existing UIC federal research awards and other federally-funded programs. Currently, there is a great deal of uncertainty about what will happen and understandably, federal agencies have not released any specific guidance on how they will administer these budget cuts, if necessary.

I wanted you to know that we are working on this issue and will keep you informed as more information becomes available. I will also be working with the Provost and Deans and other campus leadership to evaluate the impact of any cuts on the campus and to develop plans to address the funding issues created by such actions.
