Chancellor Message to Campus

Tobacco-Free Campus

Dear Campus Community,

In April 2012, a Smoke-Free Campus Implementation Committee and multiple subcommittees were established to develop and implement a strategy that would guide UIC to become a Smoke-Free Campus. The resulting consensus of the committee and subcommittees was to implement a Tobacco-Free Campus rather than a Smoke-Free Campus.

After consultations with the President of the University of Illinois, UIC Vice Chancellors and Deans, the UIC Faculty Senate, Senate Executive Committee, Graduate Student Council, Undergraduate Student Council, and the Health Professions Student Council, I am pleased to announce that UIC will become a Tobacco-Free Campus effective July 1, 2013. The tobacco-free policy (PDF) can be found in the policy and procedures section on the Human Resources website and on the campus website.

UIC will also launch a public awareness campaign that will engage and inform students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors and educate them about the health risks and lifestyle challenges associated with tobacco use.

The University of Illinois at Chicago is committed to creating and maintaining a healthy, productive environment for all its students, faculty, staff, patients and visitors.

Sincerely,

Paula Allen-Meares
Chancellor,
John Corbally Presidential Professor

Mark Donovan
Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services
