Chancellor Message to Campus

September 2013

Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

I invite you to watch via video my second annual address, a yearly update on the progress UIC is making in all aspects of our mission. Please take a few minutes to view the videos listed in the links below, which summarize the campus strategic thinking that is evolving as we continue to position ourselves to meet the needs of the 21st century.

Last year, my first State of the Campus address focused on many of our challenges and objectives, based on data, measured and analyzed, to provide a snapshot of where UIC stood in the world of higher education, as a growing institution with increasingly significant impact around the world. I welcome you to watch them, or revisit if you have already seen them, as the essential material based on such data does not change much from year to year. This second address highlights our aspirations and how we see our future path.

As UIC assumes its place as one of the leading public research institutions of higher learning located in the great American and global city of Chicago, we have been thinking deeply about our future. As universities take on greater responsibilities in all aspects of our society, we must be absolutely certain that we are putting our assets and resources towards the best possible outcomes, in efficient and effective ways.

It is crucial that we create and maintain a dynamic and creative path, from research discoveries and innovations to useful tools and well-grounded solutions, for everything from health care and education to cyber security and the social sciences. My aspiration is to create greater synergies among our colleges and schools. Our engineers will continue to collaborate even more deeply with our architects and biologists. Our artists will work with our computer scientists, and our doctors, dentists, and pharmacists will work with our business faculty. Together they will form greater entities than the sum of each individual part.

That is our goal. This is our strategy.

I would like to thank all of you for your commitment to UIC's missions. I offer this second State of the Campus address as a constructive guidepost to our invaluable work and as a re-affirmation of how much we can accomplish together.
