Lon KaufmanLon Kaufman appointed Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost

Vice Provost for Planning and Programs Lon Kaufman has been appointed Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost effective August 15, 2011, pending approval by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois.

Dr. Kaufman has been involved in many projects such as the 2010 UIC Campus Master Plan, the UIC Diversity Strategic Thinking Document and Strategic Plan, the UIC Learning Outcomes Assessment Program, and the development of a UIC Social Justice pipeline. more > >

Chancellor Recognizes Advisory Board's Service to UIC

The Chancellor hosted a breakfast for the UIC College of Engineering Advisory Board which is comprised of industry leaders from Chicago and across the country. The Chancellor thanked the Advisory Board members for their service in securing funding for college priorities, promoting the College and UIC to industry leaders, and helping the College build relationships with community and corporate partners.

The April 27 story "Setting sights higher" included a quote regarding the University of Illinois at Chicago that reflects a misunderstanding of UIC's quality and mission and diminishes the achievements of UIC's faculty, students and staff, and also overlooks the strengths of Northeastern Illinois University, a similarly diverse urban public institution. more > >

Chancellor, students speak out against bullying

Chancellor Allen-MearesLeading off a “Take a Stand Against Bullying” forum, Chancellor Allen-Meares stepped to the lectern and told the crowd “As an African American I have been bullied. It was a means of social control.

“I’m delighted this nation has decided to take this issue seriously. Bullying will not be tolerated on this campus,” she added.

Moderating the session was Stacey Horn, associate professor of educational psychology, who has a $750,000 Ford Foundation grant tostudy bullying in schools. The program was coordinated by the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues. more > >

Recognizing Alumnae for Civic Engagement, Service

Three alumnae returned to campus to receive the gender and women’s studies program’s Civic Engagement, Community Service and Community Organizing Award.

Certificate Program Supports Chancellor's Vision

Chancellor Allen-Meares with students in the GLCCC programThe Chancellor recently greeted students enrolled in the pilot Global Learning Community Campus Certificate (GLCCC) program which started this semester. It's one of the programs gaining traction in support of her Global Leadership Initiative and vision for UIC.

Students enrolled in this program shared with Chancellor Allen-Meares their hopes for how it will serve them to be better students at UIC and eventually serve in global health leadership roles upon graduation. Coursework beginning this fall will include recently designed public health courses. more > >

Congratulations to UIC College-Prep Mathletes

Congratulations to the UIC College-Prep Mathletes and their teacher and coach Catherine Doyle on their stellar performance in this year's Chicago Public School Math Olympics Competition.

The competition, which represents all CPS high schools, has three subdivisions that compete internally, followed by a final competition among the division leaders.

UIC won its Division (C) and placed first in both Algebra 1 and Geometry in the division. In overall competition, Luis Zuniga placed first in Algebra 1 and Michelle Longoria placed fifth in Algebra 1. more > >
