The UIC Honors College

Welcome to the UIC Honors College, which provides an environment for advanced intellectual growth and a foundation for life-long learning! The Honors College is a community of (a) students seeking extra intellectual challenges as well as campus and community engagement and leadership experiences, and (b) faculty members seeking collaboration with some of the most motivated students on campus.
The Honors College gives students many special opportunities:

  • Scholarships, tuition waivers, and awards for undergraduate research, study abroad, and civic engagement
  • Faculty mentors who are leaders in students' fields of study
  • Supportive professional advisors who help with all aspects of college
  • Hands-on learning in faculty-sponsored research across the disciplines
  • Interdisciplinary and specialized honors coursework, including 3-credit core courses and special interest seminars
  • Honors activities that enhance academic growth and independence through extra exploration in courses, community service, research, study abroad, etc.
  • Honors Capstone Project, a senior thesis experience with a faculty advisor.
  • Leadership and social experiences within student organizations such as the Honors College Advisory Board (HCAB), Society of Future Physicians, Honors College publications such as Red Shoes Review and UIC OneWorld, etc.
  • Dedicated facilities, including a computer lab, quiet study library, social and group study lounge, meeting rooms, kitchenette, and honors housing in James Stukel Towers
  • Social opportunities including plays in downtown Chicago and honors students' very own yearly Ball!

  • Honors College Community Lecture Series: "Guess What Is Chess?"

    Dr. Ekaterina Pirozhenko, Post-Doctoral Fellow in teaching and mentoring in the Honors College, will give a talk entitled "Guess What Is Chess?" on Thursday, January 31, 2013 at 6:00 pm in Burnham Hall Room 121.

    This is the inaugural lecture for the Honors College Community Lecture Series, which opens the Honors College to the surrounding neighborhood, and provides a forum for alumni, friends, students, and community members to interact.

    In this talk-discussion, we will problematize the image of chess in our culture and discuss social values and norms that are projected on this game.
