IAIMS elsewhere

The National Library of Medicine (NLM)started the Integrated Advanced Information Management System (IAIMS) initiative over 10 years ago and throughout these years a number of institutions have become part of the IAIMS community. UIC has joined this community, and UIC's IAIMS project--named Athena--will benefit from the experience of these institutions.

This page was created to give UIC faculty, students, and staff insight into what IAIMS (and the IAIMS process) is all about, which is why we provide a list of URLs for the Web pages of many of the IAIMS institutions. Because we want the list to be complete, we ask for your help in identifying other sites to include on this Web page. Please send your additions to athena@uic.edu.

IAIMS consortium

Directly below is a list of past, present, and future organizations interested in the IAIMS process. It includes a list of current members with contact information as well as a listing of the currently active grants. There are also reports about consortium activities and meetings. Please note that not all of the consortium members are listed here. Go to the consortium site for a full list.

(* denotes a current grantee)

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG)

The only professional society to receive IAIMS funding from NLM. This URL is for the general ACOG site. For a report on their recent IAIMS activities, click here.

Baylor College of Medicine

A "graduate" of the first round of IAIMS grants, this time of the second round of IAIMS funding.
*City of Hope National Medical Center A current holder of an IAIMS planning grant. A specific URL not yet identified. One of two non-medical school holders of IAIMS funding.
Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center A "graduate" of the first round of IAIMS grants, at that time an eight-year process. The IAIMS grant laid the foundation for the Department of Medical Informatics at Columbia University.
Duke University A "graduate" of the first round of IAIMS grant funding.
Georgetown University A "graduate" of the first round of IAIMS funding.
*LDS Hospital, Salt Lake City A current holder of an IAIMS planning grant. A specific URL not yet identified. One of two non-medical school holders of IAIMS funding.*
*Louisiana State University Medical Center A recent recipient of an IAIMS planning grant.*
*Medical College of Wisconsin A current IAIMS grantee with some interesting ideas.
Oregon Health Sciences University Another "graduate" of the IAIMS funding process.
*University of Iowa This current IAIMS planning site is in the process of applying for an Operational IAIMS grant. A copy of the Iowa planning grant is included. In addition to the IAIMS site linked above, they also have an interesting online forum about IAIMS. Of course, Iowa is also the home of the Virtual Hospital, always worth a visit.
University of Kansas Medical Center A new participant in the IAIMS process.
*University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey A current holder of an IAIMS planning grant.
*University of Missouri A current recipient of IAIMS support from the National Library of Medicine.
University of Pittsburgh This URL points to a progress report from Pitt.
*University of Rochester Medical Center A current IAIMS grantee. And the gracious host of the IAIMS consortium home page.
University of Virginia
The University of Virginia received NLM IAIMS planning grant funds from 1994-96. Health sciences center-wide strategic planning was also occurring in parallel with several information technology task forces at work. All recommendations pointed to a pressing need to better integrate the information systems of the clinical enterprise, a process that is in negotiation with Eclipsys, a firm that has worked with Harvard affiliates. The academic information enterprise has been strengthened by a new department in the School of Medicine, which will provide an academic home for health informatics at UVA. Consideration is being given to develop a proposal for IAIMS operational funds within the next year. [From: Linda Watson of UVA]

*University of Washington

A current operational phase grantee. This group has very strong leadership and deep talent, and it has had a considerable impact on the university and health science center. This site has a very useful IAIMS and informatics resource page.
*Vanderbilt University This institution has an operation phase IAIMS grant. Unlike most successful IAIMS applicants, it received this grant without an NLM-funded planning grant. This was possible because the leadership at Vanderbilt was very experienced in the IAIMS process and had a strong track record.
Virginia Commonwealth University/Medical College of Virginia
A new participant in the IAIMS process.
*Washington University Medical School
A current holder of an IAIMS planning grant. A specific URL not yet identified.
*Wayne State University A current holder of an IAIMS planning grant. A specific URL not yet identified.
West Virginia University A new participant in the IAIMS process.
*Yale University / New Haven Medical Center This is one of four institutions to hold a current implementation phase grant from NLM.
