UIC Health Sciences Center receives $300k from National Library of Medicine

Chicago, March 1998 -- The University of Illinois at Chicago's Health Sciences Center was awarded a $300,000 Integrated Advanced Information Management System (IAIMS) grant from the National Library of Medicine. The IAIMS grant will assist UIC in planning the integration of its academic and clinical enterprises using the latest information technologies.

At UIC, the IAIMS process has officially been named ATHENA@uic.edu (Athena for short).  The leadership of Athena is grounded in the office of vice chancellor for health services, yet faculty involvement is university-wide: Over 40 participants, including faculty leaders and students, are committed to implementing the initiatives set forth by UIC.

The principal investigator for Athena is Walter Panko, PhD, who jointly serves as assistant vice chancellor for health informatics and director of the School of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences. The co-principal investigators are Elaine Martin, director of the National Network of the Libraries of Medicine's Greater Midwest Region, and assistant university librarian for health sciences; James Bono, assistant vice chancellor for planning, marketing, and business development; and Richard Mendola, PhD, chief information officer at UIC Medical Center. The project director is Donald Mon, PhD, director of informatics strategy in the School of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences.

"Changes in our health care system require that academic health science centers leverage their strengths and exploit their concentration of expertise," says Dr. Panko. "The National Library of Medicine’s support for Athena offers us an opportunity to make better use of our expertise and knowledge through technology. It also means that UIC can better project that expertise and knowledge out to the people in Illinois who need it."

This IAIMS phase I planning grant is the first step in a nationally competitive process that can potentially lead to a grant of approximately $3 million. In winning the grant, UIC joins a group of approximately 30 institutions that are partners with the National Library of Medicine. This group includes the Baylor College of Medicine, Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center University, Duke University, University of Michigan, Yale University/New Haven Medical Center, Washington University in St. Louis, the Vanderbilt University of Iowa, and the University of Washington, among others.  Athena
