UIC Health Sciences Center receives $300k from National Library of Medicine

Walter B. Panko, PhD

walt01.jpg (9032 bytes)Dr. Walter Panko is the principal investigator for UIC's Athena project. He joined the School of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences in 1995 as a professor and director of the school. At the same time, he was also appointed assistant vice chancellor for health informatics at the University of Illinois in Chicago Health Sciences Center. The creation of  the School of Biomedical and Health Information Sciences in 1995 reflects the commitment of UIC Health Sciences Center leadership to participate in the IAIMS process of the National Library of Medicine.

Dr. Panko received his doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Missouri in 1969. As a biomedical researcher, he held faculty positions at the University of Virginia and Baylor College of Medicine and was active in the Human Genome Project. He was also a senior information technology executive at Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Michigan. He concentrates now on research and teaching in health care informatics. His research interests include enterprise integration, the computer-based patient record, and the use of the Web for knowledge management. Athena
