Two students named academic all-stars
Farah Shareef and Ying (Amy) Ye have a lot in common.
They each are completing separate, groundbreaking medical research projects that have drawn national recognition.
Dedicated students, they’ve both succeeded academically in the Honors College and the Guaranteed Professional Program Admissions Initiative medical program.
They were among three UIC students to win the national Goldwater Scholarships last year.
And now they’re sharing another honor: both are among 60 college students nationwide selected for USA Today’s All-USA College Academic Teams, which recognizes undergraduates who excel in the classroom and dedicate their talents to benefiting society.
Shareef, 20, a bioengineering major, receives a $2,500 cash award as one of 20 selected for the Academic First Team.
“Honestly, I was shocked,” she said. “I was extremely surprised and happy that we could bring this honor to UIC.”
Ye, a junior who enrolled as a freshman at age 15, is one of 20 selected for the Academic Third Team.
“I was very speechless when I heard,” said Ye, a biological sciences major.
