Like some of the other 450 or so people who attended the Sept. 8 grand opening of the renovated Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, Marcia Schaeffer came for personal reasons.

Schaeffer has her own connection to Hull-House: her parents met at a dance there.

With the renovation, the museum will expand its outreach to teachers, social workers, immigrant groups and "all the people who have a historic, intellectual and social connection to Hull-House history," said director Lisa Lee.

"The museum is filled with wonder and excitement about the stories that fill this house: not just stories about Jane Addams, but the many reformers who worked with her and the everyday people who came through this space and infused it with life."

“The museum is filled with wonder and excitement about the stories that fill this house: not just stories about Jane Addams, but the many reformers who worked with her and the everyday people who came through this space and infused it with life.”

The museum reopened after a five-month project to restore the second floor and install new exhibits throughout the house.

The renovation was funded in part by a $350,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts through its “We the People” initiative to advance the teaching of American history, culture and democratic principles.

Admission to the museum is free. Hours are Tuesday–Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
