Helping high schoolers dress for prom
Two dentistry faculty members are helping to make prom a little more special for some Chicago high schoolers.
Alison Doubleday and Julienne Rutherford, assistant professors of oral biology, collected 20 dresses to donate to students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.
Doubleday and Rutherford started the prom dress drive after receiving an email from a friend who works at the school saying that students were in need of that perfect dress.
Rutherford remembered how important prom was to her, right down to the details of her prom dress, an “awesome, shiny, silver-and-gold dress that was poufy with silver lace.”
“If you don’t have that special dress you may not feel like going,” Rutherford said. “This is going to make a big difference for girls who may not be able to go.”
College of Dentistry students and staff were excited to participate because the college is focused on volunteer and service work, she said.
Dresses will be collected through Friday at the school, 1852 W. 22nd Place. For more information, contact Rutherford at firstname.lastname@example.org
