jeepney (jeep-ney). n. a Philippine twin-benched bus, seating about a dozen passengers.
“Para po!” (pa-ra-po) the term that passengers say to let the driver know that they are at their stop.

UIC’s Filipinos in Alliance

invites you to get on our jeepney as we journey through our expressions of culture and showcase the talent that [FIA]* has to offer. Come watch the debut of our Philippine Culture Night (PCN) on Friday, October 13th, from 7 to 9pm in the SCE Illinois Room.

A jeepney is one of the main forms of public transportation in the Philippines. The busy streets and traffic-filled highways are full of these large, colorful vehicles. They are decorated according to and by the driver himself. As passengers gaze out the jeepney, they are able to see, hear, and smell everything that the jeepney passes by: from houses, to buildings, to landscapes, to street vendors, to people. Once passengers reach their destination, they yell to the driver, “Para po!” and as the passengers leave, new passengers get on.

Don’t miss your jeepney!
