RE Acting Dean of the College of Pharmacy Steven M. Swanson

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Steven M. Swanson has agreed to serve as Acting Dean of the College of Pharmacy (Designate), effective immediately, and pending Board of Trustees approval. This appointment follows the appointment of Jerry L. Bauman, Dean of the College of Pharmacy, as Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost (Designate).

Dr. Swanson earned his doctorate in Pharmacognosy at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Following postdoctoral training at the Cancer Research Laboratory, University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Swanson joined the faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham for three years. In 1998, he was recruited back to UIC as an assistant professor where his research has focused on the discovery of anticancer drugs from natural sources and understanding the role of hormones, particularly growth hormone, in cancer. For the past 15 years his research programs have continually received federal funding and he has published 74 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Dr. Swanson’s service activities include Director of Graduate Studies in Pharmacognosy, Assistant to the Director of the Research Resources Center, Interim Leader of the Experimental Therapeutics Program of the UIC Cancer Center and Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Pharmacy.

The UIC College of Pharmacy is the flagship pharmacy school in the State of Illinois, and is ranked among the top ten colleges of pharmacy in the nation by the most recent U.S. News and World Report survey of graduate schools. The research profile of the college maintains at fourth place among 120 U.S. colleges of pharmacy receiving National Institutes of Health funding, and rose to third in total federal funding. The College’s faculty and students are regularly recognized with the highest awards and accolades of their disciplines.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Swanson to his new role in the College of Pharmacy.
