Chancellor Message 2/22/12

Message to Students, Staff and Faculty
RE recent news and upcoming events

Dear Students, Staff and Faculty,

I write to share a few of my recent efforts and some significant upcoming UIC campus events.

Washington DC

I recently travelled to Washington DC for the opportunity to meet with a number of our representatives. My intention is to make certain that our elected officials are aware not only of the economic contributions we make on a daily basis, but of the impact we have on K-12 all the way through professional doctorate education. From our principal mentoring programs to our doctorate programs, it's very important that key officials are aware that our economic impact is strong and essential to our communities. I met with Congressman Danny Davis, Sister Rosemary Nassif, Special Advisor to the Undersecretary of the Department of Education, Dr. Nadine Gracia, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Minority Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, and Roy Wilson, Deputy Director of Strategic Scientific Planning and Program Coordination at the National institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities. I want to extend my gratitude to Kappy Laing, Executive Director of Governmental Relations, for her assistance.

University of Illinois Foundation (UIF) Meeting

The UIF recently held its annual meeting and I'm delighted to note that UIC has increased our number of UIC alumni on the board with the addition of Jose Santallan. In addition to Mr. Santallan I was joined by Bill Merchantz, Kay Schwichtenberg and Rick Hill among other great friends of the campus such as Lou Friedrich. We continue to plot a course of growth for the foundation.

IBHE Performance Based Funding

In August 2011, Governor Pat Quinn signed into law Public Act 97-320 directing the Illinois Board of Higher Education (IBHE) to create a broad-based committee to develop a funding model for community colleges and public universities based upon degree completion. On December 6, the Board received a progress report from the Performance Funding Steering Committee recommending a new approach to state funding that promotes the key goals of the Illinois Public Agenda for College and Career Success, by focusing on increasing completion of college courses, certificates, and degrees, with special emphasis on students who are academically or financially at risk.

I have been working with President Hogan and with the other Chancellors to assure that this new funding model represents our mission and increases the benefits we can provide to our students. I am planning to invite either one of our very own budget persons or a representative of the IBHE to brief the Faculty Senate.

College of Medicine at Peoria

On March 1, I will have the pleasure of joining colleagues on our Peoria campus to celebrate Regional Dean Sarah Rusch's UIC Woman of the Year award. The Chancellor's Committee on the Status of Women nominates an outstanding woman each year who represents the best of what our community holds most dear. Dr. Rusch has dedicated her entire academic career to working at the U of I College of Medicine at Peoria.

IGPA Pension Forum

The IGPA will be hosting a pension forum at UIC scheduled for March 6th. For more information and details please visit the IGPA site. You will also find information on the state's plans which suggest a new hybrid retirement system for employees of public colleges and universities that would be partially funded by additional contributions from workers and the universities that employ them.

UIC Site to Welcome Nobel Peace Prize Winners

UIC will be the setting for the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates this spring, the first time the summit has been held in the United States. Mayor Rahm Emanuel recently came to the UIC campus to announce the event at a press conference at Jane Addams Hull-House Museum. With its theme, "Speak Up, Speak Out for Freedom and Rights," the summit will be held on April 23-25 at the UIC Forum.

The Urban Forum

On December 6, 2012, UIC will again host the Global Urban Forum and Governor Pat Quinn has graciously agreed to honor us by serving as co-host. This event titled: "Metropolitan Resilience in a Time of Economic Turmoil" will bring together scholars, mayors and elected officials, and other thought leaders from around the world in a constructive and dynamic debate about cities, metropolitan regions and the challenges we face as trends in the world's population continue to become more urban centered. I want to extend my gratitude to Dean Mike Pagano for his efforts to date.

Urban Serving Universities

Discussions are underway with members of the Coalition of Urban Serving Universities to bring their conference to UIC in 2013.

30th Anniversary of the UIC Campus

Finally, please join in throughout 2012 at the many events, lectures and performances to mark the milestone that unified the east campus with the west medical center to create the University of Illinois at Chicago, UIC. Announcements of activities will be forthcoming throughout the year and I urge you to participate.

I thank each and every one of you for contributions you make to our campus community every day in large and small ways. You are the reason we continue to excel, expand and improve in countless ways as we continue to provide excellence in teaching, research and discoveries that impact our world.

Thank you,
Paula Allen-Meares
