RE Provost Tanner stepping down
Dear Members of the UIC Community,
It is with great regret that I inform you that after eight years of distinguished service as Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, R. Michael Tanner has decided to step out of this position and enter a new phase of his career as a faculty member in the College of Engineering effective January 15, 2011.
Michael has done a marvelous job as UIC’s chief academic and budget officer during a time of historic financial challenge and uncertainty. He has kept the campus afloat despite extremely trying circumstances, and his dedication, collegiality and integrity will be greatly missed. For all he has accomplished in this vital role, he deserves our applause and gratitude.
I am also very appreciative that he has given so much notice to help us prepare for the transition. Working closely with the Board of Trustees, President Ikenberry and President-designate Hogan, I will launch a national search for a new Provost. I encourage internal candidates to apply when the search is officially underway. On the appointment of an interim Provost following Michael’s departure as well as on nominations for the search committee, I will consult broadly with all key UIC constituencies, including the Deans, Senate Executive Committee, Academic Professional Advisory Committee, Staff Advisory Council, student leaders, alumni and others.
In the coming months, as we plan the transition, I hope you will join me in expressing our deepest thanks to Michael for his outstanding service.
