It is with great regret that I inform you that after more than three years of distinguished service as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dwight A. McBride will be leaving this position to become Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost for Graduate Education at Northwestern University as of November 1, 2010.
Dwight has done a marvelous job as dean of UIC’s largest college during a time of historic financial challenge and uncertainty. He has not only kept the college afloat despite extremely trying circumstances, but has also moved forward many initiatives in LAS by partnering with Fermilab and Argonne National Labs on a combined three new joint faculty appointments; increasing major gifts in development and growing the LAS Board of Visitors; establishing the School of Literatures, Cultural Studies and Linguistics; developing the LAS Distinguished Professorship Program; initiating the “Meeting of the Minds” series in the College to highlight and encourage the broad interdisciplinarity of our LAS faculty; establishing the Program in Asian American Studies; and inaugurating the LAS Undergraduate Research Initiative. His dedication and collegiality will be greatly missed. For all he has accomplished, he deserves our gratitude.
When Provost Tanner returns from vacation, he will begin planning for the LAS leadership transition. I hope you will join us in expressing our deepest thanks to Dean McBride for his service to UIC.
