Coach Collins welcomed back as Flames upset Illini

Coach Collins and Chancellor Allen-MearesPrior to the Flames' 57-54 victory over the Fighting Illini, former UIC men's basketball head coach Jimmy Collins was recognized for his 27 years of dedication to both teams.

Collins was an assistant coach for the Illini for 13 years, including a 1989 Final Four appearance. He was named head coach of the UIC Flames in 1996 and led the program to three NCAA appearances, one NIT bid, four 20-win seasons, two Horizon League championships and was conference coach of the year in his first season. His 218 wins are the most in the history of UIC basketball.

Collins and his family was then treated to the thrilling upset by the Flames over the No. 12/14 Illini at the United Center. The victory marked UIC's first win over the Urbana-Champaign campus team since the 1990-91 season. more game notes > >

Global Metro Summit 2010 held at UIC Forum

Richard Stengel, Time magazine managing editor; Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa; Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley; Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter; and Bruce Katz, vice president and director of the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings.University President Michael Hogan welcomed to the UIC Forum “Global Metro Summit 2010: Delivering the Next Economy,” a program examining how metropolitan areas are leading the post-recession economy.

The Dec. 8 event was hosted by the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings Institution in partnership with the London School of Economics, the Alfred Herrhausen Society, and Time magazine.

Christopher Kennedy, chair of the University of Illinois Board of Trustees, hosted a luncheon for the summit, which brought together policy experts, executives, and mayors of major metropolitan cities around the globe.

Before the summit, UIC and the London School of Economics and Political Science hosted a panel discussion on “The Next Metro Economy: Confronting the Persistent Challenges of Cities.” The session was chaired by Michael A. Pagano, dean of the UIC College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs and interim dean of the UIC College of Business Administration.

Mayoral Candidates Hold Public Forum at UIC

Ten candidates vying to become Chicago's next mayor outlined their goals and platforms, and fielded questions at a public forum at UIC.

Among the panelists were UIC's Dick Simpson, professor and head of political science; Maria de los Angeles Torres, professor and director of Latin American and Latino studies; and Saad Jamil, president of Undergraduate Student Government. more > >

Campus Insights showcases UIC Research, Activities

Rick KittlesUIC faculty and students from a range of disciplines got a chance to put their best foot forward at a Campus Insights presentation to the University of Illinois Board of Trustees before the November 17 board meeting.

The series, initiated by board chair Christopher Kennedy, gives each campus an annual opportunity to showcase research and activities. With College of Medicine Dean Joseph Flaherty as emcee, researchers presenting short overviews of their research.

Chancellor and President Hogan tour UIC in 3D

Chancellor and President Hogan at College of Medicine displayPresident Michael Hogan and Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares were among 150 donors, alumni, students and staff who came to check out some of UIC's most innovative programs Friday at University of Illinois Foundation Day: UIC in 3D.

Colleges and campus units showcased their programs at the event in Student Center East, which included presentations by students in math, neuroscience, education, pharmacy, medicine, kinesiology, criminal justice, biological science and theater performance.

Chancellor honors employee service and award winners

Several hundred UIC employees were lauded at this year’s Employee Recognition Award Program Nov. 3 in the UIC Forum.

Those welcomed by Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares included winners of the Merit, CAPE, WOW, INSPIRE and Luminary awards, plus employees honored for length of service.

Barbara D. Brown, a research specialist in health science in the department of psychiatry, was honored as this year's employee with the longest service: 50 years.

Chancellor's Lecture: The Sustainable Energy Challenge

George Crabtree and Paula Allen-MearesGeorge Crabtree, UIC Distinguished Professor of Physics and Special Advisor on Energy participated in the Chancellor's Lecture series to address the challenge of global dependence on fossil fuels and the effects on our economic, social and political future.

Professor Crabtree is also the Senior Scientist & Distinguished Fellow for Argonne National Laboratory.

Reflection Room offers retreat away from hectic pace

This room is a refuge for those who need a break from the noise and stress we all face in our daily lives.

The Reflection Room is open to all who seek a brief moment of peace and serenity from the hectic pace of study and work.

Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner at UIC Forum

Oprah Winfrey and Toni MorrisonOprah Winfrey and Toni Morrison took the stage at the UIC Forum to talk about the power of literature at the Chicago Public Library Foundation's Carl Sandburg Literary Awards Dinner.

There were also remarks by Jayne Carr Thompson, president of the library board, former first lady of Illinois and a 1967 UIC alumna, and Mayor Richard Daley, whose father helped make UIC a reality. Jim Tyree, CEO of Mesirow Financial, who received an honorary degree from UIC in 2007, presented Morrison with the Carl Sandburg Literary Award.

IOM-UIC Midwest Conference on Diabetes and Obesity

Chancellor and Rep. Danny DavisChancellor Allen-Meares welcomed U.S. Rep. Danny Davis (pictured), who provided the opening remarks at the Midwest Conference on Diabetes, hosted by the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, UIC and the College of Medicine.

“UIC is proud to co-sponsor this important meeting on a critical health concern,” said UIC Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares, who is an elected member of the IOM and chairs a section of its membership committee. “Diabetes has long been a research focus at UIC, where the Chicago Diabetes Project coordinates the research of collaborators on three continents to develop a cell-based therapy to achieve a functional cure. We look forward to the day when this scourge, along with its companion, obesity, is brought under control.”

The conference brought together leading scientists, physicians and community health experts to focus on the rapidly rising rates of diabetes and obesity in the U.S.

The Jane Addams Hull-House Museum reopened after a five-month project to restore the second floor and install new exhibits throughout the house. Chancellor Signs Agreement with Dalian University to Support Exchange of Science Students

Signing of the agreement with Dalian UniversityOn Friday, August 27, 2010, Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares and Jinping Ou, President of Dalian University of Technology signed an institutional agreement that supports the exchange of graduate and undergraduate students in science. Professor Farhad Ansari, Head of Civil and Materials Engineering Department is the PI for a PIRE grant that seeks to establish a collaborative US-Asia network of centers to pursue basic research and education in the area of Intelligent Structural Health Management (ISHM) of Safety-Critical Structures. Students under this exchange program will utilize global test beds necessary to evaluate the sensor technologies being developed at UIC. The education goals of this project are to foster in our students a unique set of skills and capabilities to conduct research and work with the international community or in international environments.

University President Michael Hogan and Chancellor Paula Allen-Meares welcomed new students to mark the beginning of their collegiate careers at the fifth annual UIC Convocation. About 4,150 students and their families attended the annual event, which was followed by a picnic, games and music at the Chancellor's New Student Welcome Block Party in the courtyard of the Student Residence and Commons on the east campus.

New Coach Committed to Winning On and Off the Court

Moore, 37, a University of Wisconsin assistant coach who helped lead the Badgers to five straight NCAA tournament berths, succeeds Jimmy Collins, who announced his retirement after 14 seasons.

Peoria breaks ground for cancer research center

Ground breaking ceremonyU.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood was among dignitaries wielding a shovel at the groundbreaking Monday for the College of Medicine at Peoria's Cancer Research Expansion Project.

New facilities open in Rockford for health sciences

Ribbon cutting at new Rockford facilityChancellor Allen-Meares joined about 500 students, faculty, university administrators and community leaders to celebrate the opening of a new $26.5 million building addition to the Rockford campus.
