Chancellor Message: New Provost Named
Lon Kaufman appointed
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost
I am delighted to announce the appointment of Lon Kaufman as Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost effective August 15, 2011, pending approval by the Board of Trustees of the University of Illinois.
Professor Kaufman's long and distinguished record of service to UIC is well known. He is very well regarded and highly respected across the spectrum of our vibrant and diverse community.
As Vice Provost for Planning and Programs, Dr. Kaufman has been involved in many projects such as the 2010 UIC Campus Master Plan, the UIC Diversity Strategic Thinking Document and Strategic Plan, the UIC Learning Outcomes Assessment Program, and the development of a UIC Social Justice pipeline. Prior to that, Lon was the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and Dean of the Honors College. In this position, he was responsible for the development of UIC College Prep, a health-science focused, lottery-based, charter school within the Chicago Public School System. He also served as Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and Director of Graduate Studies, Biological Sciences.
Additionally, Dr. Kaufman brings abundant experience from his professional activities that include service as a frequent panel member for the NSF and Panel Manager for Plant Growth and Development at the USDA; an external reviewer on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Plant Physiology; and an invited external reviewer multiple times for NCA/HLC 10 Year Re-Accreditation Site visits. These unique experiences will be most beneficial to UIC as Lon assumes this new role.
Dr. Kaufman received his Ph.D. in Cell and Developmental Biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook and his B.A. in Biology from the Queens College of The City University of New York. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. His research interests include the regulation of gene expression, signal transduction and crop productivity.
Lon Kaufman has been a member of the UIC community for over 26 years and has the breadth and depth of experience that we need moving forward during these challenging times. His level of involvement with our various strategic planning advances will be of paramount importance to his role as the chief academic officer and budget administrator. His values reflect UIC in the most profound way and he will be a force for our continued growth and recognition as the premier urban public research university we have become.
I hope you will join me in offering Lon a warm welcome and your generous support as he takes on his new role at UIC.
At this time I would also like to extend, on behalf of the campus, very highly deserved thanks to Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost, Jerry Bauman. Jerry came to this job during a very demanding and challenging time for the University and he has done an excellent job of keeping us on a steady path. I look forward to our continued work together as he returns to his research and his role as Dean of the College of Pharmacy.
I would also like to extend our gratitude to the consummate leadership of the Search Chair, R. John Solaro, Distinguished University Professor and Head of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics and to the entire Search Committee and for their diligence, hard work and time. I extend appreciation to the Senate Executive Committee for their active involvement and participation throughout the process, and also to the Deans for their full engagement and continued support. Finally, I thank the entire UIC campus community for attending the public forums and for sharing your thoughtful input.
