Great Cities at U I C. Commitment and engagement with global and local communities
A great city makes a great university

As a public institution, UIC has a three-fold mission of teaching, research and public service.

Research

  • Yearly research expenditures total nearly $200 million

  • Every new job from grant funds creates 1.63 other jobs in Illinois

  • 13th nationwide in the number of full-year National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships received by faculty members over a recent eight-year period.

  • A UIC team discovered that a substance found in red wine, grapes and other foods may help prevent cancer. A chemical compound found by a UIC researcher in a rain forest has shown great potential in treating AIDS in clinical trials.

  • UIC researchers are in the midst of a five-year, $13-million national study to identify what deters young people from smoking, drinking and using illicit drugs.

  • The UIC Medical Center is a lead trial research center for a nationwide study of breast cancer treatment drugs.

  • UIC's Electronic Visualization Laboratory, home to one of the creators of the special effects for Star Wars, has created the Immersadesk, a virtual-reality environment that allows surgeons to familiarize themselves with complex procedures before operating on patients. The technology has also led to breakthroughs in industrial design and graphic arts.

  • The UIC Medical Center is a key participant in a National Institutes of Health study to address the problem of HIV transmission from pregnant women to their babies.

  • The first sequential bone marrow/kidney transplant was performed at UIC in 1998.
