Great Cities at U I C. Commitment and engagement with global and local communities
A great city makes a great university

As a public institution, UIC has a three-fold mission of teaching, research and public service.

Public Service

  • When he laid the cornerstone for the UIC campus in 1963, Mayor Richard J. Daley declared, "Just as universities make great cities, a great city makes a great university." Today, UIC's Great Cities Initiative implements hundreds of teaching, research and service programs designed to improve the quality of life in Chicago and other metropolitan areas.

  • UIC invests more than $100 million each year in public service activities, from health care programs to education to small-business assistance.

  • The University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago treats 480,000 patients each year, 85 percent of whom are from the Chicago area.

  • UIC is one of only six sites designated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a National Center of Excellence in Women's Health.

  • UIC's new outpatient care facility consolidates all aspects of modern health care, providing top-quality integrated medical services in a patient-friendly environment.

  • UIC's Division of Specialized Care for Children annually serves more than 20,000 families in all 102 counties in the State of Illinois.

A powerful economic development engine for the city of Chicago

  • UIC is the 19th largest employer in Chicago with more than 12,000 employees, more than 40 percent of whom are African- American or Latino. UIC's total direct economic impact in the city is more than $2 billion per year.

  • UIC's South Campus project will bring a mix of academic buildings, student and private residences and retail shops to an area identified by the City of Chicago as needing revitalization. The project will generate hundreds of jobs and more than $1 billion in new economic activity.

  • Less than one third of UIC's $1.171 billion operating budget comes from the state of Illinois. Earnings, private gifts and sponsored programs, student tuition and fees and other sources make up the remainder of the funds.

  • UIC's campus union buildings serve more than 4.8 million visitors attending nearly 7,000 events annually.

  • The UIC Pavilion hosts more than 240,000 patrons attending more than 90 events annually, including athletic competitions, concerts, business meetings, area university and high school commencements, and religious ceremonies.
