When he laid the cornerstone for the UIC campus in
1963, Mayor Richard J. Daley declared, "Just as
universities make great cities, a great city makes a
great university." Today, UIC's Great Cities Initiative
implements hundreds of teaching, research and service
programs designed to improve the quality of life in
Chicago and other metropolitan areas.

than 12,000 employees, more than 40 percent of whom
are African- American or Latino. UIC's total direct
economic impact in the city is more than $2 billion
per year.

Less than one third of UIC's $1.171 billion operating
budget comes from the state of Illinois. Earnings, private
gifts and sponsored programs, student tuition and fees
and other sources make up the remainder of the funds.

The UIC Pavilion hosts more than 240,000 patrons attending
more than 90 events annually, including athletic competitions,
concerts, business meetings, area university and high
school commencements, and religious ceremonies.
