Campus Crime Alerts
Message from UIC Police January 13, 2010
A string of three strong-arm robberies in the near vicinity of the UIC campus this week warrants extra measures by police -- and extra personal precautions on the part of the campus community.
We believe the crimes to be related. In all three crimes, a lone victim was attacked from the rear by a pair of assailants, who either choked the victim or knocked the victim to the ground and took the victim's belongings. The description of the offenders in all three crimes is similar. The crimes (one each on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday) occurred at different locations and at different times of day.
The security tips below are no doubt very familiar to you by now. But, in particular, "be aware of your surroundings" means don't let yourself be distracted by electronic devices such as cell phones or iPods, and don't let a winter hat or hood isolate you from noises that would alert you to danger. This may have been a factor in some or all of the recent crimes.
UIC Police are assisting Chicago Police in the investigation of these crimes and have stepped up patrols in areas of concern.
UIC Police offer the following security tips:
- be aware of your surroundings
- try to travel in groups when possible, particularly after dark
- use well-lit walkways
- on campus, look for the location of the nearest emergency call box (there are more than 1,500 across campus)
- the emergency number for UIC Police is 5-5555 or 312-355-5555, which should be set on speed-dial on your cell phone
- report crime promptly to police
If you have information regarding these crimes, please call UIC Police at 312-996-2830.
