Alumni Celebrate Social Work Month

Alumni welcomed the beginning of spring and celebrated Social Work Month with a “meet and greet” on Wednesday, March 21 at Jak's Tap. Plenty of food and refreshments kept the conversations going. The alumni group was joined by a few Jane Addams students who found the event a great opportunity for socializing and networking with future colleagues. We will keep you posted on upcoming events.

18 th Annual Honig Lecture

On April 3, the 18th Karen Honig Memorial Lecture featured Dr. David Springer, University Distinguished Teaching Professor in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin, and Director of the Inter-American Institute for Youth Justice, speaking on “Juvenile Justice Reform: Harnessing the Spirit of Hull House.” Dr. Springer gave an impressive presentation on the conditions of youth involved in the juvenile justice system in Texas, and shared ten recommendations for juvenile justice system reform resulting from his work.

College Announces Pioneer Award Recipient

The Jane Addams College of Social Work Pioneer Award was established to recognize alumni who have made significant, pioneering, or standout contributions to a community, state, or nation consistent with the mission of the College. This year's award recipient is Dian M. Powell (MSW '85) . She is being recognized for her sustained and vital contributions to the health and well-being of the Roseland community of Chicago, including the significant role she played in advocating for the newly designated “Roseland Medical District,” the state of Illinois' fourth medical district. This enables health care advocates to develop new medical research and treatment facilities for a historically disenfranchised community. Join us in congratulating Ms. Powell. The award will be given at the May 4 commencement.

Alumni Association Announces Constituent Leadership Award

Bruce E. Williams (MSW '03) is the recipient of the University of Illinois Alumni Association's Constituent Leadership Award. This award recognizes alumni who have demonstrated extraordinary leadership and/or special efforts in the organization, management and support of a Constituent Alumni Association. The award will be given at the May 4 Alumni Luncheon.

College Resumes Post-MSW Type 73 School Social Work Course

Beginning in Fall 2012, the College will resume offering the course that is part of a program to enable social workers who already have an MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited school of social work to obtain the Type 73 certificate required for practice as a school social worker in Illinois. This time, the course will be offered in an online format. The full certificate program coursework includes a field instruction component and a special education course (offered through the UIC College of Education). Further details about the full program with information about how to apply will be sent in a subsequent email announcement, and will also be available on the College website and on our Facebook page. Application materials will be available on the College website later this spring. We are excited about this new educational offering that will broaden our ability to respond to our increasingly mobile society.

Class of '73 Plans Reunion

Next year marks the 40 th Anniversary of the class of 1973's graduation from the UIC-Jane Addams College of Social Work. Many have careers in a broad range of settings including schools, child welfare agencies, hospitals, and non-profit organizations. Some are executive directors and others are nearing retirement -- a perfect time to celebrate and catch up on all that has happened since graduation nearly 40 years ago!

If you are a member of the Class of '73 and would like to join the planning committee, please feel free to contact any of the current members: Annette Johnson ( ajohns5@uic.edu ); Alva Norton Nichols ( Alvar_43@hotmail.com ); Edward Potts ( epotts@uic.edu ); or Donnella Bishop Ward ( donnellabishopward@yahoo.com ). The committee plans to host a couple of events beginning in the fall leading up to the spring 2013 reunion. Look for additional information in the coming months and consider being a part of the festivities.
