What's New

College Resumes Post-MSW Type 73
School Social Work Program

The College has resumed a program that enables individuals who already have an MSW degree to obtain the Type 73 certification required to practice as school social worker in Illinois. One course in the program will be presented online. Applications are due July 6. Read more about the program and find a link to the application form here.

Article Cites Amy Watson's
Research On Police Training

Associate Professor Amy Watson was quoted in a recent article on the effect of special training on the way law enforcement personnel respond to situations involving people with serious mental illness (SMI). The article on GoodTherapy.org summarized the study of Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training for which Watson is principal investigator. "Overall, these findings suggest that officers that use respectful measures receive more cooperation from individuals with SMIs," the article states.


Von Nebbitt Profiled in UIC News

Von Nebbitt, Associate Professor in the College, is featured in a UIC News article examining his research on the impact of foreclosure and public housing on adolescents and families. One study measures the levels of stress experienced by youth in public housing. Another investigates how single mothers in Chicago public housing are bridging the gap between meal expenses and food stamps.

News & Events

Grant Supports Efforts to
Reduce Health Disparities

Sheila Castillo, principal investigator of the Center of Excellence in the Elimination of Disparities at Chicago (CEED@Chicago), and associate director of the College's Midwest Latino Health Research, Training, and Policy Center, was quoted in a story on local National Public Radio station WBEZ. CEED@Chicago has received an $850,000 continuation grant to address health disparities in Chicago. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention awarded the one-year grant to help reduce diabetes and cardiovascular disease among Latino and African American populations in the Chicago area.

On April 3, the 18th Karen Honig Memorial Lecture featured Dr. David Springer, University Distinguished Teaching Professor in the School of Social Work at The University of Texas at Austin, and Director of the Inter-American Institute for Youth Justice, speaking on "Juvenile Justice Reform: Harnessing the Spirit of Hull House." From left are George R. Honig, M.D.; Dean Creasie Finney Hairston; and Dr. Springer.



Joe Hollendoner (BSW '03, MSW '04), vice-president and chief program officer of the Howard Brown Health Center, speaks at a field instructors' breakfast earlier this fall. Hollendoner was founding director of the Broadway Youth Center, a program of the Howard Brown Health Center and its community partners. Today, the Broadway Youth Center serves more than 5,000 LGBT and other at-risk youth each year and has been a field placement site for the College.
