Post-MSW Professional Educator License (PEL), School Social Worker Endorsement
The Jane Addams College of Social Work is a nationally recognized school with the mission of educating students to the level of professional social worker, advancing knowledge in the field, and providing leadership in the development and implementation of policies and services on behalf of the poor, the oppressed, racial and ethnic minorities, and other at-risk urban populations.
The School Social Work Concentration curriculum prepares students to become school social workers and prepares them to apply for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Professional Educator License (PEL), School Social Worker Endorsement.
The Post-MSW (PEL) School Social Worker Endorsement program is a non-degree program which prepares individuals who have already obtained an MSW to become eligible for the ISBE (PEL) School Social Worker Endorsement application process. This endorsement is required by the ISBE to practice as a school social worker in the state of Illinois. The program involves a field education component (SOCW 574 and SOCW 575), which comprises a two-day-per-week placement in a school for a full school year, and two courses typically taken during the fall semester of enrollment. Students will receive assistance to secure a school-based field placement. Both courses (SOCW 480, Special Studies in School Social Work Practice and SPED 410, Survey of Characteristics of Learners with Disabilities) are fully online. SPED 410 is offered through the UIC College of Education. Students are responsible for applying to the Illinois Licensure Testing System to take the required certification tests (Test of Academic Proficiency prior to admission and Content Area Test prior to completion of field placement).
An applicant must have an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program with a grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (A=4.00) and demonstrate evidence of commitment to work with children.
To be eligible to register, prospective students must submit an application and all supplemental materials listed to the Jane Addams College of Social Work (see below for address):
- Official transcript denoting a MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program with GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
- A copy of the results of the Illinois Licensure Testing System Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP) indicating passing scores on all subtests. Applicants may substitute the ACT Plus Writing test (taken within the last 10 years) with a composite score of at least 22 for the TAP.
- Two letters of recommendation from professionals in the field.
- Personal statement.
