IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!

The new Post-MSW Type 73 Program has been postponed and will not begin Fall 2012. The College is accepting inquiries about the program, however. Please email Julie Fisher, fisherj@uic.edu or call 312-996-0033 for more information.

Post-MSW Type 73 Program

The Jane Addams College of Social Work is a nationally recognized school with the mission of educating students to the level of professional social worker, advancing knowledge in the field, and providing leadership in the development and implementation of policies and services on behalf of the poor, the oppressed, racial and ethnic minorities, and other at-risk urban populations.

The School Social Work Concentration, one of the strongest programs in the state, prepares students to become school social workers and prepares them to apply for the Illinois State Board of Education Type 73 School Social Work Certificate.

The Post-MSW Type 73 program is a non-degree program which prepares individuals who have already obtained an MSW to become eligible for the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Type 73 "School Social Worker Endorsement" application process. This endorsement is required by the ISBE to practice as a school social worker in the state of Illinois. The program involves a field education component (SOCW 574 and SOCW 575), which comprises a two-day-per-week placement in a school for a full school year, and two courses typically taken during the fall semester of enrollment. One of the courses (SOCW 480) is fully online; the other course (SPED 410) is offered in a traditional face-to-face format through the UIC College of Education. After completing this program, students are responsible for applying to the ISBE to take the required certification tests.

An applicant must have an MSW from a CSWE-accredited program with a grade point average of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale (A=4.00) and demonstrate evidence of commitment to work with children.

To be eligible to register, prospective students must submit an application and all supplemental materials listed to the Jane Addams College of Social Work (see below for address):
  1. Official transcript denoting a MSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program with GPA of at least 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  2. A copy of the results of the Illinois Basic Skills Examination (096) indicating passing scores on all subtests.
  3. Two letters of recommendation from professionals in the field.
  4. Resume.
  5. Personal statement.
Materials are due by July 20, 2012 and should be sent to:

Office of Admissions and Financial Aid
Jane Addams College of Social Work
University of Illinois at Chicago
1040 West Harrison (MC 309)
Chicago, Illinois 60607
